Title: muscles in the front of the neck?
Post by: chrisg on June 10, 2006, 05:53:06 PM
Are there even muscles in the front of the neck? I don't know if I just have a bigger adam's apple or if my neck is naturally thinner, but I want to build it up (the front I mean). I know about the neck harness already. I know I can just take a 7.5 lb plate and put it on my forehead while on the bench crossways and hold it there while I lift my head up and down, but I don't know what part of the neck that works. And I know to have a bigger neck, or I heard, you should have good arms. Thanks.

Dude just lift heavy and your neck will fill in. No need for a neck harness. It just ups your chances of injury! IMO

Ok, feel on your neck. You will feel your wind pipe in the middle, and then you will start to feel muscle fibers on the side. That's what holds your head up; I don’t know if anybody else created this exercise. I like to think I did though, but it's when you lean back on a bench. Like you about to do cross bench dumbbell pullovers. Get a sock for comfort and put it in the hole of a 25 pound barbell plate. I say start out with 25, until you get better. Lay back and put the plate on your forehead with the sock sticking out. That will cushion your forehead, and then start to press it with your neck upwards. Feel it out, you won’t be able to do many of them at first. You'll get better though; start out with three sets of that. Make it hurt.

I think you can build them up by doing neck and upper trap exercises. Here's a site with a little info regarding neck/trap:

Wrestler's bridge, front & back. Can get what is know as a bull neck, which can set you apart from most regular BB'ers. Gives a look of strength and a athletic impression. After a while hold a BB/DB over you and bridge with that extra weght. A 100lbs is not out of the question, and can be rather light in no time. Bridge on a folded over beach towel, easier on the head. Also work the traps extra hard because the neck usually grows rather fast on most guy's. And you want that balanced look of the neck & traps together.  A lot of very large BB'ers have pencil necks, too bad. Good Luck.

SIDE BAR: The old classic balance of a BB'er is to have the neck, arms & calfs pretty much the same measurement. So if one has a 18" arm than that should apply to the neck & the calves. I wear a 22 1/2 " collar but my calves are about 3 inches less. The arms are just a little more than my calf measurement. I would think getting those ideal measurements with anything above a 19" neck might be a chore for most guy's. A 18" neck, arm & calf would probably be more possible for most guy's.
