I saw a pic in old magazine (really old school magazine), of guy doing donkey calf rasie with weight belt on and plates hanging down. I thought this exercises was done with sum1 on back??

Does it not matter, aslong as ur benct over and start with toes on 2inch block??

my gym has a machine that has a pad that sits on your low back... makes them slightly less gay...

Well, the purpose is to have the weight OVER your hips as opposed to under, not to mention the weight isn't going to be in alignment with the calves, plus, there's no way you could use enough plate s to make it effective anyway.  The pulling downward on the spine sounds like a recipe for chronic back trouble.

Get someone to hop on your back (be sure they sit back enough on the hips) and don't worry about what it looks like.

The donkey calf raise imo is 1 of if not the best exercise for calves.Get rid of the homophobic nature that everyone seems to help perpetuate w/this exercise.You all know a homo won't be trying to ram his "member" into your lower back which is where the person used as weight is sitting.If you let a guy stand behind you & start shagging against your a$$ then your obviously doing the exercise wrong!! :D

Would a single-legged donkey be a good alternative? You could do that on a stair.
I knever have done donkey's, but if it is more effective than normal raises, jump on ;D
