I did 455 in college while playing football, this was in 1990.

I did 315 for the first time when I was 16 yrs old....I was so psyched at the time.

400 for a natural is amazing.  315 is not as impressive, but still pretty rare from the naturals I've seen.  The only naturals I know who bench over 350 I only know on the boards, not in person.

most ive seen a natural do is 385 for 7 - with "gym form" though

That is an excellent lift, natural or otherwise.

The winner of the meet in Thunder Bay put up 465 and failed at 495.  He was 5'10 / 290 and juiced to the gills.  He later won the deadlift competition with a lift of 720.

The population is over 100,000 here.  Everybody seems to know so many naturals who are lifting 400+, but at any gym I go to, even seeing people work with 225 is relatively rare.

ive never seen a "natural" hit more than 400. The people here who say they can do this should video their lifts. I used 315 as an example because naturally that is a lot of weight.

The highest I ever got was 375 natural for a single.  I have seen some o-lineman in college (small div. III school) bench well over 400lbs.  Granted, they were like 6'5" and 290lbs.

405 in 1986 at 25 years old at about 6'2" 225 pounds. Pressed it up with no bounce. Did 315 in 1980 at 19 at about 200 pounds. I was natural. I force fed myself so much food both times that I would get sick. I did no cardio. I took a weight gainer shake a couple times a day. If I ate what I felt comfortable eating I lost weight, size and strength pretty quickly. Today at 230 I bench about 330  for two or three reps on the 15 degree nautilus machine whatever that equates to in free weights.

Yes I did 405 as a Sr. in HS. When I got to college as a freshman, I did 385 on my last camp test of 10 straight 40 yd. dashes, agility drills and max squat. The bench was the last test.  (I was 17 BTW, and it was the 4th best bench on a team of 100 guys. ) All these uppper classmen on the team were asking me "what are you taking". I had ZERO idea what they were talking about, this was in 1987. I never was able to get higher than that, as a natural you eventually just tap out strength wise, or at least I did.

I am naturally very strong, in 1998 I was doing shoulder pressess with 300 lbs and I ruptured 3 discs in my neck. Had major surgery etc...I never train with anything over 225 anymore, because of my neck.

I am a lifetime natural, I have nothing to prove or lie about here, it was, was it was...I have seen other naturals bench this much as well, why your so surprised is beyond me.

300 on shoulder press is INSANE!  Too bad about the neck injury.  That was in '98, does it still give you problems or are you just being careful?

I weigh 178, with  4 to 5% bf and I benched 305 for 8 the other day. My other lifts kind of suck, though. I am natural and don't like creatine, cuz it gives me a bulky look. (touch and go reps, btw.)

Can anyone recommend a good bench shirt?  I would like to see how much it helps.

Generally, if you're a fairly lean guy, the Titan Fury will be your best bet.

If you're a bit on the heavy side, like Wolfy eg, a Titan F6 would probably suit you better.

It's the same kind of ply in both of them.

Inzer Rage is similar to both these. Avoid Crains shirts though. Generally have a bad rep.

out of curiosity, and not being a dick, but why? don't get pissed, I don't want an argument, I just don't undrstand why it matters if a shirt would help you add 30 pounds? Oh, and yes it probably would.

You need to change your training.

Train to be strongest in the top part of the lift, where the shirt don't help.

Board presses should become a regular tool in your routine.

If so, you should be able to bench 405 lbs in 4-5 months.

Let me add that your regular bench will probably take a slight jump up as well, since you're training with higher weights.

Use the shirt once every other week or every third week after the first couple of weeks.

Myself and my training partners are nowhere near as strong as most people in this thread yet we always get stares using the weights we use.

Makes me wonder where everyone trains.

in my gym, when someone does 315, most ppl watch casually.  That's a lot of weight.

without any bench shirt, i can think of maybe 6-7 guys that I've seen rep out with 315, and 3 or 4 times that I've seen someone really do 405 for clean reps.

I'd say 315 is good for the average gym rat, 405 for a natural BB, 500+ for roided or just naturally big guys like 250 lbs. and over.  I think a better benchmark is how much you can lift relative to your bodyweight.

Most I have ever seen a natty guy do is 405 for 7 solid reps.Guy I played ball with in highschool. Kid was 185 ripped in like 8th grade lol. He did it junior year in college at about 235. I have done over 300 for a single at 210 natty. I benched the 130 lb dbs 6 times last night and I am a little bitch ;D

db's are so much harder for me. I am lucky to do 90s and I can flat bench 300 like its nothing. I think loading them actually gasses me(my strength, not cardio), I must be a puss.

Agreed, DB's require more stabilization, your bench will go up if you get strong on using DB's.

130's are not too shabby!

Bertil, Ronnie Coleman, Dennis James, and all the best benchers in the history of bodybuilding could not do much more than 500.  I would say 550 is probably where their max was, although Dennis James and Don Youngblood both claimed 585+.

I'm pretty sure the guys you mention have repped 495 a few times.  Coleman does 495 for 5 or 6 in his video.

There are some freaks of nature out there, Ryan Kennelly does 405 for 20 for a warm-up.  Our own getbigger Onlyme did over 20 with 405 in a contest.

I have not done a max bench in a very long time but last fall (around oct) late night at a small party at my house while stoned i did 290 after 2-3 warmups in my smith machine (didn't make anyother attempts) at 6' 175-180lbs, but i don't remember for sure. Either way i am 200lbs now and i doubt i would not have a problem on a lift day putting up 315 for atleast 2. I doubt i will make an attempt anytime soon though.

I first got a 315 bench in early 2005. My current max is a little over 380 at 230 lb bodyweight.

I don't know about everyone else, but it was hard as hell to make further progress once I got to 350.

why is it so surprising that a majority of people here would be able to put up 315 naturally? it's self-selection . . . most people who aren't serious about lifting weights wouldn't go to the trouble of registering and posting . . . unless they had lucius fox tendencies.

Im with you man. I did not even play big time college football and we had quite a few in the 405 range and a couple exceeding that. A couple of the Samoans on the team would still be able to bench 405 immediately postseason! Drove me nuts. I dont think a 315 bench press is impressive at all unless that person has an extremely light bodyweight. If someone is juiced and only able to single 315 something is seriously wrong.

Around 1982 I did several unsanctioned bench press contests, I always competed in the 181 class at that time. One contest I was in one of the judges was Gus Resthwich (if your into powerlifting you probably know of him) on my 3rd attempt I successfully did a legal, raw 240.90kg (530lbs) since it was an unsanctioned event, they considered it an unofficial state record for that event. After that I trained with Gus at then Astro Gym in San Gabriel, Ca. This could probably still be verified either by Gus himself or the owner of Astro (now called "Lou Greenburgs San Gabriel Gym) Lou Greenberg..  I know, I know...who gives a crap :(!

Best I have done is 435 raw at 225lbs body weight. I want that 450 (455 would be nicer), but that extra 15-20 lbs at that point is murder for me.
Best I ever did with 315 was either 14 or 15, I can't remember, it was back in February or something this year.

I first hit 315 at 19 years old...I started lifting at 17.  I weighed 190 and I was using creating, but thats it.  The first time I hit 405 I was 22 and got it three times.  I was able to get that weight for a few weeks, but I ended up tearing some stuff in my shoulder (I didn't know at the time), but for some reason I was never able to go over about 350 after the injury...I finally had surgery about 2 months ago (its been 2 years) and I am still rehabbing.  Ive trained with a few powerlifters (natural and Juiced) and like most people have been saying....315 really isn't that big of a deal for experienced trainers.  That is if they are training for strength.
I do know that the first time I got 315 was a great day for me.

I wasn't natural but I didn't take much either, back then 200mg of deca was considered alot. No, it was a raw lift!

Don't for a minute believe that the lifters from former eastern Europe are life time naturals. They were clean at the day of the competition, but that's as far as I would go in claiming that they're clean...

So that benchpress of yours is an awesome lift. Especially since you're not a powerlifter, you're a bodybuilder and trains with high reps.

I've done about 330 a couple of years ago, all I did at the time was bench with my cousin every Sunday night.  I was going to school again full time and working about 55 hours a week in a shop so I had no time to lift.  Since my chest has always lagged I firured I'd start benching with him in hopes to bring it up while I was not able to train.  I ended up using all the free weight he had-he has a power rack and some free weights-I'm pretty sure it was about 330, got it up 2 or 3 times.  Right now on the smith machine I have gotten up to 305 done DC style for 11 reps.

Myself and my training partners are nowhere near as strong as most people in this thread yet we always get stares using the weights we use.

Makes me wonder where everyone trains.

When I did my best lifts I trained at World Gym East owned by Mike Katz in Hamden, CT. Every WWF wrestler of the day lifted there. I trained there from 1982 to 1986. Guys benching 400+ didn't get a second look.

I first got a 315 bench in early 2005. My current max is a little over 380 at 230 lb bodyweight.

I don't know about everyone else, but it was hard as hell to make further progress once I got to 350.

Took me 5 years of hard training to go from 315 to 405. I got to my goal and just pretty much gave up on powerlifting.

300 on shoulder press is INSANE!  Too bad about the neck injury.  That was in '98, does it still give you problems or are you just being careful?

I would say both, some days it bothers me some days it dosen't, however the Dr. that did my surgery warned me that if I continued to lift real heavy, I could rupture additional discs above or below the vertebrae that were fused togethor. I try to be more careful, but it sucks because I lost shoulder size in the process, but things could be worse, so who am I to complain.

Naturally benched 315 or more?

squatted 415 naturaly with a squat suit/belt/no wraps in competition..

age 19

weight 132lbs...
my friend mohammed ( from sierra leon) .. seriously believe coulda done well in the pros.. strong before he EVER touched juice (cause i got him his first cycle)

could bench 385 for reps..precher cutl 80s for reps..

dunno where the dood is now..last i saw him he ws heavily into coke..extacy and nubain...   :-\ and he could STILL out life most guys
side note: when he did juice he strength did go up..but not as much as you'd expect...he just blew up though...off of 1 pill drol a day and 400 mgs of test/week ( we coulda afford more)

we got all the arimidex and nolva for free though..he ws a pharm tech!  ;D  i ws using that back when it first came out and before actually..we'd get it in individualy packed little paper packets he'd swipe..

thing is he'd swipe tonnes of halotestin also..but both of us didn't wanna use that so we'd either give i away or sell it...gawd..back then i remember giving soo much halo away to powerlifters..i'd always have 2 to 3 hundred of em sitting in the car and whoever asked for em could have em.....  :-\

Thereabouts.

I did 280 in a meet in February but the IPF rules were pretty strict.  I also could have 295 that day but we only get three attempts and I failed at 300.

With "gym form" (a little bounce off my chest), I was up to 315 on the flat bench, although it would fail by IPF standards.  I did 325 for three on the decline on Sunday but of course the decline is easier than flat.

First post wohooo!!
Anyway, I know what you mean the difference with a "stop" at the bottom and the bounce.
I had 374 lbs x4 on the bench, with good form. except I had the bounce at the bottom. ( no asslift though) But as soon as i joined a weightlifting club, and I had to do the stop my weights went way down.  >:(

took 7 years of training to hit 375 as a natural at 229 pounds...a year later i hit 450 with a Titan F6 bench shirt. both lifts were in a meet and had a pause at the bottom.

I used Shawn Phillips' "How to increase your bench 50lbs in 7 weeks program" and benched 325 for on and 225 x 18 at about 185.

Tried to get back into benching to try it again (now 175), was just doing 5 x 5 with 250, and ended up in physical therapy for my shoulder.

Benching can be real tough on the delts.

I am not exactly sure why you would want to do this, 405 just isn't that much. If as many people responded to a "who has benched 615 naturally" I would like to see a vid or something. 405 I just don't find that interesting.

If you want your bench to be higher than it is, instead of insinuating that people here may not be being entirely truthful, maybe ask some of the guys with really high numbers how they got there or something like that.

Now that sounds good.  I did a routine of 5 sets of 5 reps on bench press for 12 weeks, and my body responded fantastic for strenght on that routine.  In that 12 week period my max went from 345 to 405.  And I only weighed 203 at the time, so I particularly enjoyed it all since it was double my bodyweight.

Once I reached that goal I said screw it and started training for size again and fortunately have gained 23 pounds since then.  Maybe I'll start that routine again sometime though just for shits and giggles...

See for me, I was the opposite, I need more volume than just about anyone I know to make my bench (or anything for that matter) improve. I wish I could grow like that on 5 sets. Well done man.

Thanks.  That wasn't the entirety of my chest workout, though: I did incline dumbells after that too.  But yeah, I probably didn't do more than nine total sets of chest in a workout.

Here is what he did awhile ago:

That is an excellent lift, natural or otherwise.

The winner of the meet in Thunder Bay put up 465 and failed at 495.  He was 5'10 / 290 and juiced to the gills.  He later won the deadlift competition with a lift of 720.

The population is over 100,000 here.  Everybody seems to know so many naturals who are lifting 400+, but at any gym I go to, even seeing people work with 225 is relatively rare.

Well said, i have been to many hardcore gyms and it's rare to see juiced to the gills guys bench 400 pounds or more. But here everybody benched 315 on their first attempt....

In 1980 or 81' I benched 500 at a bodyweight of 247 with Joe Gold spotting me.  Never took a thing in my life then.  That was in a t-shirt and OP shorts.  In 1986 when I was on only "test" at 298 I bench 585.  After 10 years of taking nothing at a bodyweight of about 305 I inclined 505.  I am back in the gym training 6 hard days a week.  On Monday this week I did 405 for 3.  I can do 315 for 12.  I do 315 incline for 8 pretty easy.  I also pause up to 5 seconds between reps on the bench and incline.  I also do seated front presses with 315 for 6.  And I do a full ROM with a pause at the bottom to when I press.  I also haven't lifted really heavy since 1998.  So I am getting some strength back.  My weight is dropping to and by the Olympia I would have lost about 150 pounds.  SO I am getting strength back and losing weight.  I am doing at least an hour of cardio a day.  I walk at a walking track at the old airport here one mile before I go to the gym.  Then after I train I go one the treadmill for 20 minutes then the elliptical for 20 minutes.  I try to keep my calories below 2500 a day.  My carbs below 200 a day and my protein at least 300 grams a day.  Allot of chicken and fish and now added in steak 2 times a week.  No bad food till the weekends when I go see movies.  Now David Paul has me drinking some concoction to clean out my system.  Water, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and lemon.  1 gallon a day throughout the day.  Feeling great right now.  Sleeping better more energy and finally people are telling me I am looking allot better.  Getting my thickness back in my upper body.  Still got the sides and upper ass to get off but on my way.

Keep at it man. Coming back from what you have is no small feat. Well done. I haven't had the problems you have, but, I have torn both pecs and separated a shoulder benching, and coming back was really hard.

Naturally benched 315 or more?

....Basically, expect everyone who answers this thread to bench over 315 and "natural" with single digit percentage bodyfat. No diss, I'm just telling you what to expect.~ 8)

Well, I saw a clip of Gene Rychlak popping 8 reps with 500lbs, I dont have the link, I will post it, if I can find it. but how do you rank a man who press a thousand pound?

I doubt there are more than 10 or 20 guys in the US who could rep 500 on the bench as a 242 or lighter. Larry Pacifico did sets of 3 with 500, and he was the top powerlifter in the world for quite a few years.

I have never told anyone since my accident how much I weighed at the most cause of being so embarassed.  I went from being so much in shape and riding my bike 28 miles a day to the gym twice a day and weighing 298.  That is what I weighed when I got bit.  At my highest point I weighed 560.  I just weighed myself the other day and I am at 460.  I am still obviously huge but I do not appear like you think.  Most people say no way do I weigh even close to 400.  I ained my weight in my ass and gut.  My legs barely gained a couple inches.  My shoulders and arms are as hard as anyone's  I measured my shoulders at 64" on Monday.  My arms flexed are just over 23".  My wrists are 9"  I did not measure my waist cause I don't want to right now.  I will measure once I am below 400.  I am 6'1".

I think what is the best is that I am doing allot of cardio and cutting back on the bad shit.  My energy is fine too now.  The carbs I take in are mostly from the unfiltered Apple Juice or orange juice I mix my protein with.  I also have oatmeal and sometimes Special K cereal which I love.  But no more milk (unless I have the SPecial K), no more bread of any kind.  I eat allot of spinach with my chicken, or fish.  I snack on peanut butter a little at night.  I only drink water and fruti water and the concoction David told me.  I just started that though.  As big as I got I did not get many stretch marks.  In fact I have none on my front.  And really not many on the sides.  My skin is really elastic I guess.

The only reason I decided to tell this now and give out my real stats (as I have avoided it before) is because I am strong again, and I have been losing very steady for the last couple months.  I feel a zillion times better and look a zillion times better.  The one thing about me though is my head or face never got big. The pic below was taken a couple months ago and it isn't that different from any of me before I ganined the weight.

Been training with this kid who is just 24.  He is 5'10" and weighed 250 yesterday and he is strong as hell.  He pushes me cause I didn't like him being stronger than me.  Well now I am stronger than him and making him sweat big time.

Mike Arvilla inspired me a little too. Cause he was very smooth and kind of looing like not much when he started his training for the show.  And no matter what you guys sayabout the guy.  He did an AWESOME job gettng down in weight.  And that is the hardest thing when you are big.

My goal when I was training for the Olympics before I got bit was 275.  I think at that weight I would be unreal.  At 300 my waist was around 37" and I could fit in 36" jeans which I still have all my pants.  So ultimately I would like to get to 275.  I think I can do this by next summer.  I finally got over the hump of the cardio part.  When I was so heavy I just couldn't do much cardio.  But after doing 10 minutes at a time and then raising it I am finally at an hour and could do more.

I know some of the guys are going to come on here and say how fat I am now.  But, in all honesty I am BIG but my upper body is as hard as any muscular kid and I can bet I am as strong as most of them.  My ass and gut are next to go.  I will keep you posted.  And no I will not take pics of me cause I don't feel that good about me yet.  But I will post some pics of me lifting heavy to prove I have got back some strength at least.

Most I ever did was 265 at a weight of 178lbs. That was when I was 24. Wouldn't even attempt it now cause heavy bench just kills my left shoulder.

Keith....good job man.  I remember when you posted some information on some of your first workouts & how weak you were....remember what I said....."muscle memory".  Just keep doing it & stay motivated.  Awesome job dude.

I also agree with you 100% about Mike A.  He's inspired me as well to start taking things serious again.  I have goofed around long enough.

Having a big bench is not unrealistic.  I remember one of my first workouts for chest I had.  I was in the Marines & although I knew that I was functionally strong....I attempted my first incline bench  with 115 & about knocked myself on the chin & had a hard time pressing in a straight line.  The funny part was....I could curl the bar...but could not press it for nothing.  Within 10 - 12 months....I had alot of people in my gym attention because I was able to do 225 for 6.  I have since passed that....but remember that 115 about knocked me out still makes me laugh.

No I didn't chose to be this way.  I was training for the 2000 Olympics and was heading for a bodyweight of 275.  Moved to LA to train and got bt within 2 months of moving.

I agree that 400 is not healthy that is why my goal is at least 300 but ultimately 275.  I have been traiing since the summer of 1973.  I have been living healthy from then to March 1 1998.  The doctors even said that if I wassn't as healthy I was I easily could have died like the 51 others that have died from the brown recluse bite.  I have never smoked a thing in my life.  Never took hard drugs.  Never really drank alcohol.  Even though I have been drunk 3 times in my life.  And I have lifted pretty religiously for all those years with a rare few months off here and there.  My clolesterol has never been over 130.  I still get my blood tested at least every 6 months and sometimes every 3.  My doctor says he still wants me to get down in weight, but considering my size he is ver surprised how healthy I am.  My blood pressure was 130/82 the last time I had it checked (or close to that).  A little high my doctor said but consideringmy size not bad at all.

The thing I hate the most about me right now is my upper ass and gut.  My upper body I am pretty happy with for now.  I am really pushing on the treadmill.  I do it at 15 degrees at 2.5 mph, and do long strides for 2 minutes.  Then I rest two minutes and do it again.  I do this 10 times.  It kicks my ass big time.  But I can feel it.  So, I really think I can reach my goal.  I may take a couple pics training with David Paul while he is here.  I want him to take a series of me doing the seated front press with 315 for reps.

I just want to be able to go to the Olympia and feel okay walking around the expo.  My high school reunion is August 19 too so I really want to be okay for that.  I had a reputation in high school and if I show up to fat I will lost that reputation.  So we'll see.  So far so good.  I can see why Mike A.  documented his training and everything for the show on here.  It is very theraputic.  Thanks.

Holy smokes Keith. Great work. I remember, last year, reading your posts and one of your goals was to get back and be able to get 315 (if only for pride's sake), and here you've blown past that and are hoisting four plates for reps! Man, you are on your way. Very impressive. Keep up the good work.

I hit 405 on Sept. 1 of last year. But, it took me a while to recover from it. That may have due to the fact that I did 400 even, just a few days prior and didn't give myself enough time to rest.

I mentioned who you can verify it with....why would I lie? Besides, just because someone did that in an event does not mean there isn't someone out there who can't do the same if not more!

What is your real name?  I have a good friend who knows Gus very well.  I can verify the information you have provided.  If you are telling the truth and have done over 500 lbs RAW in competition that is very impressive.  I am not stuck on how you look as I know that means squat (pun intended).

By the way, you do look thick in the last pic.

Do you know anyone that has done those kinds of lifts at those kinds of bodyweights without shirts? Also how tall are these guys. I am only curious, not suggesting for a second you are not being truthful, just in my neck of the woods we have nothing like that.

I'm 5'6!

Regardless, if I saw any guy under 220 bench over 500 I think I would shit. Well done man I find stories like yours and Keith's inspiration to try a little harder at the gym on bench day.

we used to have a guy at my old gym who totalled elite at 242 in the APF, benched 661, squatted 1003 and pulled 800 all at a bodyweight of around 237, he used to literally toy with 500, he could close grip 500 for 4, front squat 600 and one arm snatch a 160lb. dumbell, strongest guy i've ever seen.

I think that would make me want to find a new sport lol. Any idea what these guys start at with their lifts? I mean were they freaky strong in them before training?

this guy was nothing special at all without TONS AND TONS  of juice i'm talking about crazy shit like literally swallowing 50 dbol's at a time, when he came off everything he was literally 185lbs., just a crazy hyper responder and absolutely fearless when it came to massive dosages of drugs, he was a very athletic guy before he got serious about PL, great sprinter and football player and i've never seen someone who could focus more than this dude, it was like Stallone said in Over the Top when he made the comment about turning the ballcap backward he became a machine, this dude could be joking one minute and then get serious enough to absolutely bury a 650lb. front squat for 3 reps and then become normal again.

Well I have to say you have made me feel a little better lol. I am not ready to try juice, but of course, will always be curious as to what might happen if I did. God knows with my luck I wouldn't even respond lol.

yes you would, everyone does, some more than others but it's impossible not to unless you get bogus shit, this guy would go from 185-190 to 245 at the same or less bodyfat inside of two months but like i said he had no fear of ANY dose or drug if he felt taking a whole bottle would help him he would find a way to take it all, the thing that made him different was his freakish strength and he was never afraid to come off of EVERYTHING at any time if he felt he was having to many side effects.

You can ask the old Public relations Director at Cannon Films, Judy Freidman where Stallone got that turning the ball cap around ritual.................. .ME!!!!!!!!!  That was my trademark.  And the guy who impressed me most in the bench is Doug Ortiz at a bodyweight of 132 benching 440 (or something close to that) at my show.  He is the World Record holder still I think.  Just a little guy never looked like he lifted ever.  Just in great shape.  He is awesome.  You guys seriously need to come to Hawaii and hang out at my gym or even better Gold's Honolulu.  If you can't bench at least 405 for reps you might as well just go to 24 Hour Fitness.  Seeing guys rep with 405 is an everyday every hour occurence here.  I'm just really happy at least I am back up there with these guys again.

Here's me with my hat turned around during filming.  Sometimes I did it at the table. More dramatic.

gotta keep this at the top.  It is the best I looked at 400+ pounds.  This is my goal for the next few months.

Take the time and read this.

maybe my frame of reference is different, but I don't think 315 is amazing for a natural. Very good, definitely, but not amazing. I benched 405 raw and clean as a junior -- but I am not the lightest guy around and weighed around 290 at the time. So 315 clean is great, but only if you are a middleweight or lighter.
