Title: stiff legged vs. standard deadlifts?
Post by: texasRUSH on June 22, 2006, 10:46:05 AM
i've been doing stiff legged deadlifts...

is there much difference between them and using my legs from the floor? i didn't think there would be but the question just came up with the guys here at work...

i just thought the overall movement was shortened that's all....

could i possibly hit 500 from the floor if i'm doing 415 stiff leg'd?  ???

Different in many ways...you should be able to deadlift more than you stiff leg.

i would suggest doing both on seperate days (at least 2 days between)... both work the body differently, and you will be able to handle more with a bent knee.

The off the floor deadlift is one of the kings of all mass building multi joint exercises. Will work your whole body when done right & w/big weights. The stiff legged ones are more of a "specialization" exercise & are designed to target your hamstrings more than any other area of your body.

not true... stiff legs stress the hams, glutes (both of them), low+mid back, shoulders, forearms.....

i concur. I prefer sldl over standard dls as stopping the bar touching the ground maintains tension on my lower back. Really all that happens is your quads are taken largely out the picture and since i do sldl on upper body day it makes even more sense to use them as opposed to standard. With standard's i just felt it in all the wrong places you know. Now with sldls my lower back gets torn up real bad and i still generate the same DOM in my traps the following day as i would with standards.

The key is tension.

Do at least one of them to get the most out of physique

Ok guys ya got me! LOL.I was just using that as an example.Of course they stress other areas also but I was just giving an example. Most ppl. that use them use them to concentrate on a specific body part.I myself always liked them for lower back.Always felt the mind/muscle connection was key here depending on where you wanted the exercise to target in on.
