definitely barbell shrugs... to the front... you can use a stupid amount of weight

Best trap mass builder is the one that works best for you. Might start with shrugs using a trap bar for a fuller employment of that diamond shaped muscle. Remember that the traps, as a short range working muscle, is very powerfull so a lot of weight used should be encouraged. Reps any where from 3 to 20. A fast muscle contraction is important, just like the calves. Good Luck.

i've done shrug after shrug and no size what so ever has ever been put on my traps
but here lately doing deadlifts is making them wake up that's for sure! i'm feeling it all the way down my back! i used to do behind the back barbell shrugs and dumbbell shrugs but would get nada for results...
315-385 was my usual working range with nothing...
bend my body forward a little since they extend down between my shoulder blades? might help hit them better with lighter weight? ???

Dumbell shrugs work best for me. I know alot of people on getbig think they're 'gay', but according to them everythings gay. With barbell shrugs to many people fall into the vanity trap and use to musch weight.

i went up in weight because the lighter shit was never working..so the only thing i could come up with...
more weight! still guy but not thicker or bigger...it's taking ridiculous amounts of weight for me to put on size lately in any lift...my arms JUST TOUCHED 17" after doing 70lb preacher curls for the past 2 months!
i mean really... >:( i figured the say i started doing that i'd have some sleeve busters for sure!

I too dont feel traps sore etc form shrugs of any variety, but after 1st session back at cleans, the next dat my traps wer on fire.

do you feel like there's alot of risk involved with hurting your shoulders doing cleans? ???

Quite a few guy's I know use 500-600 lb shrugs off a rack. A personal friend of mine does 900+ partial shrugs for rack training. And as TexR said, untill doing 70lb DB preacher curls, the arms didn't advance much. That same personal friend of mine does 120+DB preacher curls now and than just to test his arm strength (had not done any direct arm work at all in any regular training). Some guy's just seem to need that max weight (for them) to get bigger. Or if some of theses people change the rep scheme & reduce the training time, they tend to again add muscle growth .
Risk? I can't believe a guy from Texas would be concerned with risk or getting hurt. They would have you believe the have real men down there, from what I heard. Balls to the wall, kind of guy's. Let's not have any more sissy talk about risk or getting hurt from any guy from Texas. (Though I did play in a game against some guy's from Texas...tough arse line play) Good Luck.

I havnt done them for a while as i had hurt my back (not doing cleans tho).
Its the most explosive thing u can do in a second, its got shrug and upright row movement al in it so really hits traps.

Shrugs to the front and then to the back....
Perhaps upright rows but shrugs are my personal favorite!

anyone every try behind the back BB shrugs I've tried them and fell I have little to now ability to correctly excute the movement I've seen Cutler use them in his training but I know I must be missing something anyone have a better angle to utilize

high pulls- its a wide grip kinda upright row action. the bar wont go higher than your navel.
