The vertical leg press is an awsome leg workout. I have one of these at home and in my mind it replaces the front squat. Why dose most gyms abandon this workout, is it because you have to get out from underneath the exercise and put more or less weight on. The vertical leg press is a great exercise to add to you leg routine. I think most gyms should have it. I know for a fact IFBB pro Wong Hong uses it and he said it basically replaces the squat. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson120.htm . All I can figure out is most people in the bodybuilding world want easier ways to workout. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Vertical leg press never did much for me; back in the day the Universal seated leg press was much better and was the best complement to squats, IMO. Squats are no. 1 and very hard to replace fully.

in my old gym, i used to do a lot of vertical leg presses but they were always a supplement to heavy squats and hack squats.

I had one in my garage, but quit using it after I broke the welds loose. Epic safety hazard.

Most of the Leg presses i've seen have a back that can go to a 90 degree angle with the direction you're pressing, or at least 100 degrees. so theres really not much difference.

You can go deeper with thise one with added gravity effect. but you wouldnt know anything abt goin past 2 inches on the ROM.

Last time i checked, gravity still works on an incline ;)
Also, if the gravity of the vertical makes it heavier, why not just add a few more plates onto the legpress?

I think they used that pic, because they don’t have any pictures of bodybuilders using the vertical leg press. If you do a search in bodybuilding.com you will see that you won’t find any pictures or examples. You'll just find some word info about it, not very much.

With all that's been said and that pic, it's unclear what is meant here by a vertical leg press. If it's as shown it's basically very similar to a hack squat. Excellent but not better than regular squats, just different. More comfortable maybe, but squats are comfortable and are the better of the two overall more muscles are enlisted, if it's as shown in that pic.

I've used the Smith to do verticals. Hard on the feet since there's not a flat surface.

Yes, you can do calf raises on the vertical. It's just like angled leg press calf raises, but vertical.
