Title: How useless was bulking up???
Post by: Wiggs on July 21, 2006, 12:18:07 AM
Whatever happen to the days when Lee priest would bulk up to 270-280 and compete at around 200-210 ever year?  Not a knock on Lee cause many other pros and amatuers used to do it and still do but what was the point of that if you compete at around the same weight every year.  The only thing you get is hypertension, and moonface. 20 lbs over contest weight is ok but that 50 + was out of control.  I guess everyone finally saw the light.

Ronnie doesn't bulk up 50lbs over his contest weight.  Hell, not even 35lbs over.

Lee just loved to eat.

I read once in Flex, Kamali saying he didn't believe in bulking up, that it didn't work for him. This was from a 2002 issue.

That's not bulking up; that's simply pigging out. Even when you're bulking up, the goal is to maximize lean mass and minimize bodyfat. Some bodyfat will occur; there ain't no getting around that. It, however, doesn't mean that you should turn yourself into a suckling pig.

People seem to forget that their bodies change over time. I've learned that the hard way (sort of). Bulking up is how I got over 200 lbs in 1996 and broke 240 for the first time in my life a year later. At that time, my caloric intake was between 5000 and 6500 calories.

I don't need that many calories anymore, hence it's one of the reasons I stopped using weight-gainers. I certainly don't knock those products; weight-gainers helped me achieve the goals I set for myself. And, I recommend them to anyone who's in the same boat that I was back in the day.

Theres been more than 1 interview i think were Lee Priest has said he didn't bulk up to get bigger, it was because in off season he just used to enjoy eating loads and thats how he just ended up thats all, i bet if he could have eaten all that off season food and stayed about 220 to 230 he would have done!

Bulking up aint useless, there is a reason to bulkup when your ass aint on stage. That's how you gain extra muscles. Lee priest bulk up to 275-280lbs If Im not mistaken. But ya'll what his contest weight is

He bulked up to 275 + and weighed the same every year.  He doesn't do that anymore and still weighs the same although he has improved his conditioning.
