yes no straps bro, but no belt either??
-
no feet on the ground or arch while benching either raw power
-
no straps
(http://www.schwarzenegger.it/mro/columbu/fc216.jpg)
I like the fact that he's not using the same size weights on both sides... It's a good way to fuck with your mind and make it harder mentally
-
Can somebody answer the question dammit? IS HE DEADLIFTING WITHOUT A BELT?
Thanks fellas! >:(
-
NOBODY HAS EVER DEADLIFTED 675 BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I miss those old school 45's
-
yes no straps bro, but no belt either??
Gotta hand it to Franco. 8)
-
It would appear so. ;D
ah thanks bro
-
NOBODY HAS EVER DEADLIFTED 675 BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's 730lbs.
-
Unreal strength. Not many guys can do that today. Especially with no strap or belt.
-
no feet on the ground or arch while benching either raw power
Exactly.
Fucking insane.

That's one of my favorite pictures.
Pure power...
-
that shit is so badass. whatta monster.
-
Not many guys can do that today. Especially with no strap or belt.
Correction. It's NO ONE ELSE!!
-
Yes,he was very strong.About the straps... powerlifters train and compete without them all the time, you have to strengthen your grip ;D

I always was more into the sexy mustached chap grinning in the background.
If I was to ready myself for the hershey highway he would be my first port of call.
(I am sick currently and partially delirious, no joke).
-
If I was 5' 2", I could probably deadlift another 100lbs. Midget lifts shouldn't count as real ones. They only have 3" to move that weight.

How do you explain him being able to grip and hold 730lbs? Can you do that?
-
How do you explain him being able to grip and hold 730lbs? Can you do that?
He was on juice (and not just for one cycle in 94') so it doesn't count :)
He's lucky to have that grip, I would be very suprised if I could grip half that weight for reps (last time I checked no).
-
Last time I gripped half that weight for shrugs with no straps, my hands were bruised for a week.
-
Can somebody answer the question dammit? IS HE DEADLIFTING WITHOUT A BELT?
Thanks fellas! >:(
So what? There are some elite powerlifters who do that, but most use it to do more weight. Using a belt isn't necessarily safer either.
-

Croatch now this was a stupid statement. I mean if I was another foot taller I would be a centerin the NBA. Or if I was 5'2" I would be the heaviest world champion jockey. I personally seen Franco many times in the gym and he is strong no matter what. And please get another ruler. That is far more than 3"
-

Of course not!
this old school athletes are an example of dedication and hard training! Nowdays few can match that kind of training those guys had back in the 70's! Today is juice based training, with low intensity! BB is a strength sport whether we want it or not. That is why many dream whith great feats on BB and never reach it and don't know why. Well, look at those pics anf find the answer!
-
He was on juice (and not just for one cycle in 94') so it doesn't count :)
You mean to tell me he juiced for his film, Beretta's Island? :D
-
Unreal strength. Not many guys can do that today. Especially with no strap or belt.
He must of had strong freaking hands.
-
I like the fact that he's not using the same size weights on both sides... It's a good way to f**k with your mind and make it harder mentally
Huh? They look the same to me ???
-
If I was 5' 2", I could probably deadlift another 100lbs. Midget lifts shouldn't count as real ones. They only have 3" to move that weight.
This makes no fucking sense. ::) Now if you were talking about those massive lardass benchers, I don't think their shit should't count since the bar doesn't have to be lowered nearly as far to hit their 400 pounds of lard.
-
Can somebody answer the question dammit? IS HE DEADLIFTING WITHOUT A BELT?

Franco never used belts, wraps or straps. Yet his power was sickening and he looked good for his height and weight. Puts the HGH guys of today to shame.
-

That was the stupidest thing that I have ever heard in my life. Dumb logic.
-
Pure strength...pound for pound he is in a class with very few others.
8)
-
Crazy lift. Can someone explain why no belt makes it more of a feat?
He looks good nowdays, besides the stomach, which isn't too bad.
-
no straps
(http://www.schwarzenegger.it/mro/columbu/fc216.jpg)
please tell me he's wearing a belt. Arnold admit that franco was always stronger than him
-
a'ight i just gotta make sure i'm seeing this right, he's not wearing a belt in that deadlift pic?? :o
you right, no belt. unless his shirt covered it. but it look like that bastard wears no belt. Power to columbu
-
Belts doesnt help it all, so theirs no point in wearing one
-
all drugs. he's nothing now
-
what about this one. he's wearing no fcuking belt.
-
Must be the pasta! ;D
-
Can somebody answer the question dammit? IS HE DEADLIFTING WITHOUT A BELT?
Thanks fellas! >:(
do you see a belt?
-

those old school belts didn't do shit...the newer thick inzer power belts help a little but i haven't been any stronger when using one. it only makes me feel more stable.

I thought Franco was 5'5 :-\
-
I thought Franco was 5'5 :-\
yes, he was 5'5
Height 5'5"
Born August 7, 1941
this monday, Franco will turn 65yrs old. I bet he still can bench 315lbs
-

it's got nothing to do with height on the deadlift, it's all about the length of the arms and where the bar is on the thighs when you lock out, so short guys with short arms actually have a disadvantage on the deadlift.
-
all drugs. he's nothing now
He's also a sixty year old man. Cut the poor guy some slack. I want to see what you look like when you're sixty. >:(

You mean to tell me he juiced for his film, Beretta's Island? :D
You mean "Fantasy Island"...that's Tataoo....isn't it ???
-
i respect franco alot for his work ethic.a true hard core training athlete who was nothing short of spectacular.he made arnolds lifts look like pussy.one of the strongest bodybuilders of all..if there is a gym lift competion, franco from 1970s vs ronnie coleman would be very impressive.i bet coleman would be beaten if this ever happened
-
I remember seeing him in the first WSM back in the 70's on CBS. He was strong as a bull in the gripping feats. He fell during the refrigerator race. Crowded by people He calmly explained He was a DC and His leg was broken so don't touch it. Like we we're talking over a beer.
-
getting old sucks
-
These old benches kill me.
I wonder what the true "safe" weight limit capacity was on these things
-

lol yeah. they look weaker than the home benches you can buy.
-
Yeah thinking about it kinda makes you feel uncomfortable like the whole thing is just going to collapse
-
why were the plates so wide back in the day :o ???

Franco was muscular and strong as hell but his legs sucked and his arms sucked. He got famous on Arnold's coat tails.
-
those old plates are awesome - my gym has a couple pairs and I always go for them first
LOL - look at the benchpress picture - he's so short, his toes barely touch the floor ;D
I remember reading an old old article about Lee Priest training back - he said he had to do sumo deads becuase his arms were too short for regular ones . . .

For some reason, this reminds me of a washed-up Mickey Mouse!? Maybe it is Franco's oversive, comfortable shoes?
-

Those benches back then were scary. You rack with heavyweight and bar bounced up and down and the rack would move.
-

hahahaha listen to the fucking expert here. Somebody get some stars for this guy hahahahah stick to giving advice on which jelly bean brands are the most anabolic hahahaha
-
getting old sucks
So does wearing a dirty shirt .
-

I was joking. I have a buddy who always says shit like that because I'm 5' 8" and he's 6' 1". There is truth in that for certain lifts.
-

Hey buff, I remember seeing this too. While the other competitors were doing that robot-stepping with the fridge, Franco started shuffling/running with it and took himself out. Self-owned!? :-\
-
LOL - look at the benchpress picture - he's so short, his toes barely touch the floor ;D
I laughed at this too! ;D
BUT - why a belt for bench press and not deads?
-

Cus he's GANGSTA'!

How can you guys make fun of a guy who is probably shorter than everyone on this board, lighter than probably most, yet he is many times stronger. And you can really see the guys who are just over 20 years of age or younger. For anyone to make fun of how Franco or Arnold or anyone from then looks now is just funny as hell. You guys have no idea how shitty you are going to look at 50 or 60 years old and many of you will not live that long. I too thought I was indestrucible back in my 20's and 30's but reality hit me. I promise you 100% you too will hit reality. Just give these guys the props they deserve and praise them for what they have done in their life. They are old, retired and don't train like they did 30 years ago. Give the old farts a break.
-
In Pumping Iron Arnold makes Franco laugh while hes benching I think it was 315 lbs.Every person i've seen in a gym that this happens too is never able to continue w/their set.Franco finishes his set w/ease!The man was just freakishly strong. What a man does in his younger yrs should not be held against what he can/cannot do in the later stages of life.

Ah Keith, its just the young having a bit of a go at the old. It's natural. I'm just past 40 and can see the road narrowing :'( but I still got my sense of humour. With the lads at my gym the way they are, I'd be in a heap crying without it. :D
-
why were the plates so wide back in the day :o ???
It looked that much more impressive. :D
-

They kinda had rims on them so you could lift them from bar to bar, or racking them. Imagine trying to pick up just a round 45 lb. disc with nothing to grab. Those old Olympic Standard plates all were about 1/2 " wider rims, but no heaver than the ones now with holes for carrying.
-

Yea Doc, they had dudes from all over the place. Ivan Putski was nothing, but Ken Patera, who had Olympic discus throwing experience, relay showed in the tire toss. He came in 3rd overall if my memory isn't too fried. Katz was in his prime then and untouchable in just about everything else though.
-
I miss those old school 45's
no doubt....they look like hundies.
-

I hear ya.
Seemed like anything more than 225 would start to stress out those beautiful chrome supports.
Thats the other thing.....
why was everything "chrome"?
I've always wondered if it was because back then all the cars had chrome on them

I don;t think they had powder coating yet.

Well spoken!!! If they could train in our days, they would smash all the competition, cause today few can match these guys in dedication and intensity! Franco, at 65, has bigger arms than Levrone!!!! From here you can see the difference!!!
-
Franco was a beast! I think that when it comes to training only Ronnie can keep up with him. Most pro's train like shit.
PS those arm are still muscular, especially considering his age.
