Title: Ken Shamrock set to retire, of course after....
Post by: bigbalddaddy on August 09, 2006, 05:16:46 PM
Shamrock vs Ortiz III!  Here it is from sherdog fellas...I can't believe my man Ken will risk letting Tito put him into retirement!

Ken Shamrock (Pictures), who amassed a 26-11-2 record during a fighting career that started before the first Ultimate Fighting Championship event in 1993, will retire after stepping into the cage for a third time against Tito Ortiz (Pictures) on October 10, the Lassen County News reported Tuesday.

Shamrock joined Royce Gracie (Pictures) as the UFC's first icons. He battled the Brazilian legend twice, losing by choke at UFC I and earning a draw after 36 minutes at UFC V.

Early in his career, Shamrock, later dubbed "The World's Most Dangerous Man" during a stint working for Vince McMahon, split time between the UFC and Pancrase, where he defeated fighters like Masakatsu Funaki, Bas Rutten (Pictures) and Maurice Smith (Pictures).

Shamrock would become synonymous with UFC-promoted cards, and was regarded as a figurehead for the sport in America before leaving for professional wrestling from 1996-2000.

Following his four-year fighting absence, Shamrock returned in Japan's PRIDE organization, where he fought to a 1-3 record, including a classic bout against rival Don Frye (Pictures).

It was after the Frye fight that Shamrock returned to the UFC and his first bout was likely his biggest. In November 2002 Shamrock stepped into the cage against then UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz (Pictures). He'd take a pounding at UFC 40 and the fight was called after 15 minutes.

A win over Kimo Leoplodo (Shamrock's only victory since taking out an overmatched Sam Adkins in August 2001) is the veteran's last triumph in the cage, and he has since lost three fights in a row.

His most recent bout, an early first round stoppage against Ortiz, had Shamrock pining for another opportunity at his longtime nemesis. He has been granted a third fight and it appears regardless of the result on Oct. 10, Shamrock has decided it's time to hang up his gloves.

The 42-year-old Susanville, Calif. resident told the Lassen County News that upon retirement he intends to promote MMA events, continue training fighters out of his famous Lion's Den academy, get in some golf and spend time with his family.

There should be a new campaign called "...no when to say when..." for fighters!  I think Ken as a person is incredible after meeting and talking to him for several days and getting to know him.  His passion is really to fight and it's all he knows.  I just wish he would focus on other avenues in life cause at his age he could get hurt really bad and that would be a huge blow to his family.  But, who are we to sit and judge a guy who is doing what he loves and trying to set a future financially for his family?  So what if he seems a little cheesy.  The guy is 42 years old, he's going to seem cheesy...  Till then....

Ya I like him ,and don't want to see him hurt. But I don't think the UFC does either hence the fast stoppage of thier last fight.

I like Ken too but, how many times does Tito have to hand his ass to him before he realizes he can't beat him. I don't want to see Ken get hurt but if I were Tito I'd make him tap next fight.

What a waste of a spot on a future UFC event.

Agreed!  For me there is something special about making someone submit showing total dominance!  Although I doubt that Tito would let go if he got Ken in a rear naked choke.  I think he would try to make him pass out so there is no confusion.  Kinda like the old Gracie fights were he didn't want to stop, kinda sadistic... ;D

Its hard to tell the UFC is getting desperate. if the company had some morals, they wouldnt allow Ken to fight Tito. at this point the UFC is the one at fault if anything should happen to him. they need to take some responsibility if they want the sport to grow. also already from the previous two beatings look for the ref to be anxious to stop the fight.

Are you joking me?!?!? after the last two BRUTAL BEATDOWNS Ken received at the hands of Tito ?!?.. Ken should be thanking the referee for stopping the fight and him not ending up a vegetable!!  guy just doesn't know when to say when.

The odds should be what... 25:1 for Tito ??..

Ken's conditioning has really lacked for awhile he'd stand a better chance if be in better condition

Great shape doesn't mean he's a great fighter anymore, though in my opinion he was never really THAT GREAT, I think he was just always hyped up so much, his fight record isn't that impressive. At this point it's just another day at the office for Tito, some knees to the face, slam, and GnP! - done.

I am not sure why tito is going to accept the fight. If i were him I would just laugh at the old man and say no. I think that tito juat wants make him tap for the 1st time or maybe he will just beat him for a few mins. I dont want to see Ken get hurt either but sometimse that is what it takes for someone to learn a lesson

Ken actually didn't fare too bad in the last fight. This stuff is overblown. Sure, Tito was brutalising him with those elbows, but Ken was pulling off some decent punches too. Every UFC fight now is a rematch. It's really getting boring.

its actually getting to the point where ALL marquee fights are a rubber match for a specific division. Its old, its boring and its dying a slow death

I don't know what's sadder, the fact that ken thinks he can actually win against Tito or the fact that the UFC is allowing this joke to go on... Ken reminds me of Old Yeller, just needs to be put out of his misery (before disgraces himself any more)
