Silly post before yes, I actually met Sonny a couple of times, he was often at bodybuilding events in NZ and guestposing.... Nice guy, very popular and always made time to speak to everyone.
-
Meet Sonny in 1991 or so at the Grand Opening of Gold's Gym Honolulu. Very big dude. Really nice too. He talked with that Australian accent if I remember right. And I thought it sounded cool coming from a Samoan looking guy

I got his autograph at an expo a few years ago. Seemed friendly, and he was a great BBer.

One of the best front lat spreads ever. Awesome physique.

Sonny should make a comeback, he would do well.

I don't think a comeback is possible in his case

I think Sonny smoked, had cancer, and chose to just keep plugging away rather than fight it.
kinda admirable... goes to teh question, would you rather live a good life, then fall over dead one day, or would you rather know when you're ill, have a chance at curing it, but also have a good chance at spending rest of your life in a hospital bed with tubes in you.
-
but who wants to live the last 10 or so yrs of your life in a resthome? ... and if you die at 50 - 60, at least you lived a fulfilling life and couldn't complain about all the natural problems.
not too many people in their 60s living in rest homes. more and more people are living active independant lives well into their 80s. by the time you get there, it might be significantly older.
-
you guys are both right. We had some health issues in the house lately (baby on way- things get complex) and spent some time in the hospital. it really sucks at hospitals. I honestly think I'd rather spend my life having fun and being happy, then just fall over one day, than spend the last year, worrying all the time, looking at white hospital walls in an uncomfortable hospital bed, waiting to die.
i'd rather spend my inheritance at a brothel, and keel over whenever the good Lord needs me :)

some greek BB(can't recal his name) once said that he enjoyed being in the spotlight and getting as much pussy as possible so much that he didn't care if he were to bite the dust the very next morning

He had no chance to fight it. From diagnosis to his passing was less than 2 months.

Sonny was samoan and from new zealand. the mix of his people's accent and the NZ accent produce a very very different accent to Australian. kinda like saying that the Canadian and Texan or Southern accent are the same....not even close.
it is english though.
-
Sonny went to prison? I had no idea.
-
what a shame.

I think I remember reading he was Samoan and German or Samoan and Austrian.

messiah of muscle was one of his best friends.
he got done for importing or trying to import coke with his brother in melbourne as far as i know...
he went to jail for it and got sick in there...
the governement let him out when it was obvious it was terminal and let him die at home with his family.
bbing wise the guy came up VERY fast back in the 80's. One year he was like a novice middleweight then next year he was heavyweight mr australia!... obviously responded well to the gear
I always cringed when he did his front double bicep because he performed it so poorly compared to his lat spreads - he really got his lats out there.
-
awesome bodybuilder, very underrated.

One night, I was watching NBC NIGHTLY NEWS, and there was a segment about him in a drug bust. I couldn't believe my ears.

I was thinking about this on my way home, today. Steroids may descrease your lifespan, but who wants to live the last 10 or so yrs of your life in a resthome? Why not just go the steroid route, f**k the health probs, get what you want out of your physique, and if you die at 50 - 60, at least you lived a fulfilling life and couldn't complain about all the natural problems.
what an extremely short sided thing to say. i saw jack lalane the other night in a resturant. the man is 92 and is still healthy and sharp as a tac.
you wanna avoid those health probs. well, you wont. they'll just come a lot sooner is all. you'll be 55 and on dialysis instead of 75. or 45 and getting a stint put in instead of, well, much later in your life.
do yourself a favor and get some blood work done in the middle of your next run... if your healthy, great!

ha,ha the wonders of steroids, well, are you saying that it's better to die knowing that you fufilled all your dreams of becoming a broke ass meat head than to live a long and healthy life, seeing your kids, grand kids go to college? you must be NUTZ

Sonny was a great Christian man as well as being a phenomenal BB. We all miss him dearly but Sonny is in Heaven now where he belongs. He has run the race, finished it and kept the faith.
-
Before I start I should regain state that I have no moral qualms with what Sonny did. That being said, it's very interesting that Christians would think Sonny is in heaven, despite breaking the law, all because he believes there is a big man in the sky.
I heard sonny did become "born again" in his last days... I guess he wanted to get some guilt off his chest before he died which is common.

Whatever your dreams are, yes. If bodybuilding/fitness is your life, then you'd want to get the most out of it. Dieing at 60 can see you married, have kids grown into their 20s, see a successful business/career and with not much left to do with life but, provided you're living comfortably, sit back and enjoy what's there for a year or two. I respect the hell out of people past 65 that still live happily and do what they can, but I'm just saying I feel it's better to live life to the max in every way rather than compromise (e.g. staying natural - getting 1% of results you would on roids.)
What natural BBer would say they'd rather be 'this' size than what they could be with drugs? We all aspire to be the best we can, and the BBers usually don't have any limitations as of size, it's just they plataeu without drugs, and lump it. Now, I'm natural, but simply considering the alternatives. I haven't reached my potential yet, so I don't know how big I can be without drugs. When it comes to that stage, then I'll be in a better position to decide. Seriously, though, the natural competition seems pretty weak right now. I would of thought it'd be alot better.

Pretty sure Sonny was best man at Tony Doherty's(Messiah of Muscle) wedding.

Well, if you think about it, competative BB'ing is really a big waste of time, unless you've got the genetic potential to gain high accord without hormonal support. ie. Coleman, Ray, Darrem Charles, and so on. Even for them, look where its gotten them...
I used to kind of have the same thoughts you did, but after seeing time and time again 60+ year olds with plenty of life left in them mainly because THEY TOOK CARE OF THEIR HEALTH DURING THEIR LIVES, going about daily business and many passing for still being in their fourties. Not all of em are walking around with colostomy bags, neural disorders, circulation problems you know. I guess working in the health industry, I see a fractional margin of these folks, so of course my POV is a bit representative of a small percentage. Im just saying its possible to be 60+, running a successful business, going for jogs with your dog, getting a lift in, and at the end of the day, bangin your wife with the same vigor as in your thirties is totally doable... i know this because i see it everyday at work.
For more insight, look how Don Youngblood spent his last couple years as a retired, pro BB'r.
