Title: King, the Montreal show (my take)
Post by: Disgusted on September 04, 2006, 08:00:57 AM
Ok, so a lot of you guys were totally happy with the 11th place King got last week but apparently some of you feel that the judges must have misplaced their glasses this week and for some reason decided to give him a gift.  I have ALWAYS been fair about how I have critiqued King's physique before and have never blown smoke up his ass as far as how he looked for any of his shows.  For some of you people that were at the show who feel you may have got a good look at what's going on, no one was closer to the competitors than the judges, with the exception of myself.  I was back stage for most of the show and got a very close look at all the competitors and I can tell you that King had the best level of conditioning in the whole show.  In fact I am not the only one who feels that way as a couple of the judges even made the same comment.  Flex Wheeler came up to King and me backstage and said that he felt this was the best he looked in years if not ever.  Jonnie Jackson and Darrem Charles both came up to King and complemented him on his improvement.

If some of you guys are going to make a comparison between King and Dennis Wolf, you could at least show a picture where King is hitting the pose and not just getting ready to hit the pose as I noticed in a few of them King is not yet all the way in his pose.  There's no denying that Dennis Wolf is a great bodybuilder--very wide shoulders, small waist, and nice thigh separation.  There are however a couple of things that held him back.  Dennis needs to work more on his lats and his hamstrings and he needs to learn how to hit a front double bicep pose correctly.  He holds his shoulders way too high which makes his lats disappear.  Dennis was very hard but lacked some of the fine detail necessary to place him higher, especially from the rear.  This is what separated Dennis from the higher placings.  Hopefully Isaac can post some close-up pictures of Dennis and King where you can see King's level of conditioning was far above what Dennis brought to the table.  This is the bad thing about posting pictures that are so far away.  It takes away your ability to see the fine striations and graininess of someone's physique.

Overall I think the judges' placings were very good.  Jonnie Jackson had finally come into his own with a great level of conditioning.  Good for him.  Very thick physique, nice lines, and a small waist.  He still needs to bring his thighs up in size and if he does so in the future he will place well at the bigger shows.  Darrem Charles seemed like a pretty nice guy so this is nothing personal but I was shocked at his level of conditioning.  Very deep separation in some parts of his physique but he has lacked the sharpness lately that is a trademark of his physique.  Gone were the striated glutes and separated hamstrings from past shows.  I was very shocked at how smooth he appeared in some parts of his physique.  I thought that Quincy Taylor looked great.  Quincy is a very big man and for such a tall person has a lot of mass.  His level of conditioning was excellent.  He had very thin skin.  Needs to bring up his thighs a little more to keep in the top placings in the future.  I ate breakfast with Quincy on Friday morning and he seems like a pretty good guy and commented that he's ready to do whatever it takes to keep improving.

King Kamali in the last week has made great improvements.  King has plenty of overall size.  In the future we are going to work on bringing up his thigh sweep and continue on improving his arms.  King knows that he needs to train more like a bodybuilder and less like a power lifter to make these improvements to his physique.  In the six days that I worked with King (not counting the day of the show), I was able to greatly reduce the size of his waist and as you can tell by the pictures his stomach was a lot flatter in most of the poses.  King clearly had the best glutes and hamstrings in the show and the separation and striations that he displayed in his back, especially his lower back, were the best in the show.  King already had a low level of body fat when I started to work with him.  It was just a matter of nailing the conditioning to bring out the potential that was already there.

On a final note, for some of you who think that King is not well liked or is disrespectful to his fans, you could not be more wrong.  When we got to the prejudging, from the moment we stepped out of the car, King graciously stopped for every fan and talked and took time to get his picture taken with everyone outside the venue.  This actually made King a little late for the prejudging as I was scrambling to put oil on him at the last minute before he was called to go out on stage.  After the show, King went up to one of the vendors and asked if he could use their table space for signing autographs for the fans.  For 45 minutes King signed probably close to 100 autographs and got pictures taken with fans.  King had a stack of 8 by 10 glossy photos that he was signing for the fans.  I was shocked when I realized he was handing these photos out for free.  He also handed out at least a dozen DVDs to various fans.  King did all of this for the fans for free at a time when he was extremely hungry and exhausted and could have been at a restaurant eating like the rest of the competitors.  No one knows how hungry King was better than I as I heard him say that he was starving more times than I care to remember and I almost put earplugs in ;D.

So this is my take on the show.  This is coming from someone who was up close and personal with every competitor there.  Everyone has their opinion and this is mine.

King almost always says that the crowd, Steve Weinberger, Chad Nicholls, etc. that the crowd had him highly placed after each of his dismal showings.  Why can't we do the same to him?

thanks for the insight, Disgusted. It's too bad King doesn't carry himself with fans online the way he does with them in person.

Basically an essay on backslapping.  Irregardless of what I think of King (and I'm sure he is a good guy to his fans) the pictures don't lie.  Wolf was better.  End of story.

People like you are a destructive influence on Kamali in that you don't give him the real deal.  Its that type of "friendly input" that has led to him embarrassing himself on a number of occasions.

It appeared that it was a good show as the top 5 really looked like they were battling it out . Johhny Jackson (by the pics) looked awesome and nailed his first pro victory. 8) He will be a force real soon  for top spots in bigger shows. What i don't get is why people are upset that Kamali did well? People seem as though they're taking it personal.    ??? ???

Disgusted brings ALOT of credibility, he helped Kamali for this show and he deserves most of the credit for his placing!!

Disgusted,

I already posted plenty of comparison photos here on getbig. I didn't take the photos and I didn't re-touch the photos. THE PHOTOS DO NOT LIE. Why would we take your word for it? Who are you? An unbiased observer???

As my good friend Chad Kroeger says, "Look at this photograph...every time I do it makes me laugh"

In my opinion the people closest to Kamali are the least trustworthy here.  Even more so than those who hate the guys guts.  Where as there is always a shred of truth even in the naysayers opinions, the friends of Kamali are always bullshitting  him into believing things that just aren't true.  You see it every time he posts on his site about a contest.  Apparently everbody told him he was great, every contest.

Its a joke.  I don't hate the guy but he didn't deserve to beat Wolf and with his midsection so bad I support his 11th placing last week too.

Disgusted, with all due respect, you're hardly an objective, impartial outside observer.  ::)  King's your friend, and you put a lot of time into helping him prep for the show.  You deserve a lot of credit for bringing his conditioning in better that it has been in years, but even you can't fix his horrible structure, or reverse the gh and slin-induced Palumboism.

Botton line: King looked far better than he did a week ago, but there's no way in hell he beats Denis Wolf. He should have been 5th or 6th.

A serious question to some of you who think that Wolf should have beaten King: Who else do you think Wolf should have beaten?  Personally I would not have a problem with him beating Darrem.  I feel that Dennis's conditioning was better than Darrem's.  Darrem was way off form and I talked to a guy this morning who trains at the same gym as Darrem and is very familiar with his physique.  He thought his conditioning was terrible (his words).

Bro I DO NOT take this as a personal attack and I am not trying to be a dick, but what the hell do you mean by a distended lower back?  Are you saying that he has tumors growing on his lower spine?  Or that his kidneys are extremely inflamed?  If you could see his lower back up close and personal, you would see how extemely thick and striated it is from doing heavy deadlifts.  His lower back does look different for this reason.

this isnt a knock on you. ive stated a couple of times that the difference in conditioning has been great and you did manage to bring his waist down to a degree, and i give you props for that your obviously more skilled in contest prep expertise than i am.but i think its a valid point so i made it

No offense taken bro.  To be serious though, King's lower back is very thickly muscled and in a different way than other people's and I'm assuming this is from the heavy deadlifts he's done for many years.

Disgusted did a great job with Kamali this past week, but by all the pics I've seen Wolf beat him!!
I'm with Joe on this one and not many people have had more disagreements with Disgusted on here than me.

The guy knows his shit and, looking at the photos, I'm pretty sure he fixed up a few of king's poses as well (no crunching down on the front double bicep, the front relaxed done more effectively than usual the majority of the time etc).

Hopefully King will stick with him for the next year or so and LISTEN to what he says especially in regards to training style to bring up his weak points... most of which need king to lighten the load and isolate each muscle more with slower, peak contraction movements.

One point chick is 100% right on is that king needs to not go above 245lbs onstage... conditioning is key for him.

As for the montreal? Wolf looked better to me from the photos... he does need to fix his front double bicep pose but the taper, quads and arms were so much better than king's superiority in certain areas I had to give it to him.

Conditioning wise photos are not a great guide but if darrem can beat both being softer than wolf should have beaten king then as well...

Even though I am sure we will disagree again in the future thanks for the props!  ;D You are right about the poses and the future training. Putting an inch on your arms and adding some outer quad sweep does not equate to added body weight. At least not to any great degree. Wait till you see what he looks like next time after I work with him for 7 days instead of 6.  ;)

I think you did a great job with him.  He should forget whoever else he has been taking advice from and stick a noral offseason diet and workout.  I also think he could get MAD RESPECT if he cleared the decks on this board and simply came back and stopped the smack talking and promises of some grand scheme.  He is entertaining for sure, but the mouth is just too much.

As far as the show went, based upon the pics I have to say that Wolffe looked a lot harder and a lot more detailed.
I was not there of course, but I am only going based on the pics.

I love how these apologists always come on and tell us how we just don't understand. You have to be there to be able to form a real opinion. The pictures aren't accurate. What bullshit. Anyone with eyes can clearly see that Wolf is superior. It's not even close. And talking about detail, give me a freaking break, Tamali has absolutely no detail anywhere in his arms, chest, delts, legs. Tamali was given a gift, plain and simple. Don't come on here and tell us we don't know what's going on. This result is a complete joke and we all know it. Don't make it worse by insulting us too.

Well said

Even though I am sure we will disagree again in the future thanks for the props!  ;D You are right about the poses and the future training. Putting an inch on your arms and adding some outer quad sweep does not equate to added body weight. At least not to any great degree. Wait till you see what he looks like next time after I work with him for 7 days instead of 6.  ;)
Of course we'll disagree... you can't help being wrong some of the time buddy! ;D

First a couple of things. I love this sport and i have no axe to grind against king. In fact i think he looked 100% better this time out. I read this thread with interest however and i need to call it as I see it, namely THERE IS NO WAYYYY ON EARTH KING SHOULD HAVE BEATEN WOLF!

You can say king was better conditioned and was not on 'shot' when a photo was taken, but I have not seen one single photo where king beats wolf, not one.

This is a bullshit decision and everybody (well almost it seems!) can see it is.

Disgusted did a great job on King and he looked much better but to suggest that King should have beaten Wolf is way wide of the mark.

As I said I love this sport but it is decisions like this that makes me realise how fucked up it is. :-\

People did indeed boo when Dennis was announced 5th. I was happy as hell to see and meet the guy. even got an autographed Mag from him...but unless you were there in person, it's hard to judge from just photos and criticize. I had no doubt Dennis was ON! but I think the judges were abit too focused on the fact that King improved...and also that king has been in the sport for a long time! (sometimes it's all about paying dues in the biz) I wish dennis the best! and no doubt he's a rising star, but King was, as many stated: in his best shape in a long while. Liking Dennis wolf and all, i wasn't so upset, or shocked when they called him 5th. I saw the scoresheet thought, and feel however that Dennis should have had numbers ALOT closer to Kings...because King over Dennis, would be by a thin margin...they both were in top shape.
_i also got some pics that i took yesterday! enjoy folks!
PS-Props to "Disgusted" for the work, and hopefully will be the man who keeps Kamali a constant competitor, and not a 50/50 filp flop. :)

did king sharpen up from prejudging to the evening show in your unbiased opinion?

I really think he maintained it pretty well. not much of a improvement/loss if any
I dunno if in shows like this they count the routine, but his was off the hook! that might have been a factor.

No offense taken bro.  To be serious though, King's lower back is very thickly muscled and in a different way than other people's and I'm assuming this is from the heavy deadlifts he's done for many years.

you want to know who's lower back blows King's out of the water....That would be the wolfman's...Take a good look at the pictures and tell me that Wolfman's lower back isn't one of the thickest on the planet....Wolfman has done some serious deadlifts....I don't see what you seeing in King's lower back...Kings back is starting to look deformed.  Like he has torn muscle's all over it...Its nothing like it used to be...

Disgusted and I have gone back and forth on here before and it was nice to meet him in person. As with many people on here, when you meet face to face it's often very different. Jim (disgusted) is a good guy and knows his shit. His prep cred just went up in what he did with King for this show, no one can dispute that. This is by far the best I have seen King in a handful of shows I've seen him compete in. This show was one of the more entertaining and fun shows to be at. The competitors were having fun on stage during prejudging and the routines at night were entertaining as well. I'd have to give King the nod for the best routine of the night. Love him or hate him, he got the crowd energized at the night show. If I was to give one critism to King it would be his tan. I would have liked to see him darker to show his conditioning off a bit more. The whole King vs. Wolf discussion is one that everyone will agree on some points and disagree on others. I think many of the people find Wolf more aesthetically pleasing and can relate to him more, hence wanting him to do well. Dave Palumbo thought Art Atwood should win at the Europa, I like Mark Dugdale's physique. We all have physiques that we like. Many people think Jay should beat Ronnie, so on and so forth. The judges gave King the nod and what would a bodybuilding show be without fans disagreeing. There has yet to be a show where someone isn't pissed off about the placings.

The venue was top notch and the promoter did a great job. I'd recommend anyone thinking of competing or attending this show to do so next year.

LIFT

It's difficult to judge from photos. Did you see it as King beating Dennis?

In some areas yes and other areas no. That's why I take pictures and don't judge the show.

Disgusted, you and King did a great job in the past week.  Very significant improvements, props to you!  King should have written everything he did this week and duplicate it for the next show cause this is the best he has looked in a long time.

I still believe Wolfe should have placed ahead of King.

I agree that Dareem did not look very impressive from the pics I saw, not his normal.

Darrem arrived into Montreal just a couple of hours before prejudging due to this flights being cancelled in Philly. Given the circumstances he did better then most would. His conditioning improved as the show went on.

Thanks bro. Everyone is entitled to their opinion so it's cool. I won't be doing the exact same thing next time because I will not have to bring him down from 265 to 243 in 6 days. He will be WAAAAAAAY bigger and MUCH thicker his next show and 10 to 15% sharper.
