from my perspective (as a brazilian) the most famous people in australia are:
Russell Crowe (i know, he is not technically from Australia, but nobody gives a sh*t, LOL)
Mel Gibson
Nicole Kidman
Hugh Jackman
and of course Lee Priest !! ;D
-
most popular is a lot different than most famous.
russell crowe isn't very well liked.
hugh jackman is.
paul hogan & mel gibson haven't spent time here for a lot time either has greg norman.
joe hachem is unknown because poker isn't on TV.
jennifer hawkins (ms universe) is pretty popular and highly fuckable also...
Ian thorpe (the swimmer) is huge.
Most of the aussie cricket team and some past players are popular... guys like steve waugh
certain media types are icons like ray martin and bert newton.
certain football players are popular in different areas depending upon where they play... joey johns is basically a god in NSW. don't know much about AFL but victorians are CRAZY about that sport and the players.
harry kewell is huge now because of the world cup.
the prime minister is outwardly hated yet he wins every election easily... mainly because the opposition party are a bunch of clowns...
actually, australia in the last ten years has become full of fringe celebrities famous for things like big brother and IDOL which is hardly a cause for celebration since most of them aren't very talented.

This thread shows that Australia isnt a good exporter of great men :-\

Wrong and wrong. The 'in like Flynn' namesake was from Tasmania, never something he was ashamed of or needed to obscure. Errol was one of a kind (GIS 'Flynn and Barrymore, if you want an eye-opener); he was a case of too much too fast. And the best they can come up with these days is pseudo-actors/pussies like Charlie Sheen!? ::)

The biography I read (yes I read a book) said he was Australian and left because he was allegedly charge with running a ship full of aboriginal people from one island to another, The boat sank, he swam to shore and abandoned his cargo. Honestly I don't believe it, if this was they case it wouldn't be hard to find him.
Guess that is what I get for liking a man who died before I was born.
-
The band "Men At work"
I'm sure the list keep going and going.... Lee will have to do something ""important" or Crazy" to make the top 100 at least

Yup, he got in lots of South Pacific trouble before his Hollywood days. He details, with some embellishment, these in 'My Wicked, Wicked Ways.' Also wrote an earlier book about sailing (something 'Last' or 'Ends').
/His father was a quiet, respected marine biologist at the Uni in Hobart. Must have been mortified. ;)
