Stephan Bonnar tested positive for an anabolic steroid after his fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 62 on August 26th.
The specific banned substance that was found in Bonnar's post-fight urine sample after his unanimous decision loss to Griffin was Boldenone Metabolite, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission's drug testing results.
Boldenone is an anabolic steroid that is intended for use only by veterinarians, specifically to help rehabilitate injured horses. It has several brand names for veterinary use, including Equigan, Equipoise, Ultragan, and Ganabol. It is on the banned substances list of all the major athletic commissions and sports leagues.
In a formal complaint filed on Wednesday by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Bonnar was informed of his positive test result and was made aware that the NSAC has the right to suspend and/or fine him for his positive test result, pending a disciplinary hearing.
The amount of the fine can be up to $250,000, or the complete amount of the fighter's purse for the event, whichever amount is greater. In this case, Bonnar's purse for the August 26th fight was $16,000, so the maximum possible fine is $250,000.
The length of the suspension can be whatever the NSAC deems appropriate, but the suspensions have ranged from three to twelve months in past instances of mixed martial artists and boxers testing positive for banned substances.
According to the NSAC complaint, Bonnar's side has 20 days from the date of the complaint to issue a formal response to the NSAC in writing, which would put the date at September 26th.
After Bonnar's side has formally responded, the NSAC will set the date for a disciplinary hearing, at which Bonnar will be "entitled to be represented by counsel of his choice" and will also be entitled to "cross-examine witnesses, present evidence, and argue on his own behalf before a decision is made by the Commission."
Even before his drug test results came back positive for a banned substance, Bonnar had already been medically suspended for six months due to a broken right thumb, so it's unlikely that he would have fought again this year even if he hadn't tested positive for a banned substance at UFC 62.
Boldenone is not generally a popular drug among bodybuilders because of the fact that traces of the drug remain in the user's system for several months after use. According to Food and Drug Administration filings, which cited the Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation, Boldenone is intended for use by veterinarians as "an aid for treating debilitated horses when an improvement in weight, hair coat, or general physical condition is desired."
The FDA filings added, "Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian." Due to potential health risks for humans, the FDA has gone so far as to say that Boldenone "should not be administered to horses intended for human consumption."
The possible side effects of Boldenone when used by humans include high blood pressure, increased water retention, elevated levels of estrogen, possible hair loss, flu-like symptoms, anxiety, and acne.
A total of eighteen fighters competed on the UFC 62 card on August 26th, and four of those eighteen fighters were drug tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. In addition to Bonnar, the other fighters who were drug-tested were Chuck Liddell, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, and Forrest Griffin, all of whom passed their drug tests.
With a cost-per-fighter of $278.40 to run all of the tests for steroids, stimulants, and recreational drugs, the total amount spent on drug testing for UFC 62 was $1,113.60.
At the UFC Fight Night card in Las Vegas on August 17th, four of the eighteen fighters who competed were drug tested by the NSAC. Those fighters were the two main event fighters, Diego Sanchez and Karo Parisyan, as well as two fighters who were selected at random, Josh Koscheck and Jason Von Flue. Sanchez, Parisyan, Koscheck, and Von Flue all passed their drug tests.
As with UFC 62, the total amount spent on drug testing for UFC Fight Night was $1,113.60.

I'd never have picked Bonnar to be juiced. Equipoise is good for endurance (so I've heard ;D), but I don't understand why guys are 1. juicing if they've got such odds to be tested or 2. why not something short acting?

You do what you go to do to win. Would be funny seeing how many of the PRIDE guys test positive for PRIDE USA.

1) HAhahahahaha... Bonner looks like absolute crap and he's on gear!?!?!? you must be joking..
2) I'm sick and tired of the NSAC, who gives a flying f**ck if the fighters are on gear!?!?! this sh*t is getting ridiculous, don't they have something better to do with their f**ing time.

First off, the guy doesnt' look like crap. And as mentioned above EQ stays active in your system for several months after your last dose. In moderate dosages it won't make you look like ronnie coleman. Really, he was in great shape. He is 6'4 and 205. That is an ideal size for a fighter. Don't talk shit about someone who you know nothing about. I highly doubt you would come here to chicago and disrespect him to his face.

It's not about disrespect, this is a BODYBUILDING BOARD..not Sherdog, and yes he looks like SHIT, look at some of the other guys, they're built, have 6 packs, good muscle seperation and they don' t even juice. He's a shitty fighter anyway, he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I thought this was the MMA BOARD of getbig, not the BODYBUILDING BOARD. I hope that you are not so naive as to think that he is the only guy using gear in the UFC. I don't know exactly how much he was allegedly taking but I'm pretty sure it was a small amount just to aid in recovery from the workouts. So in small dosages EQ will not have an overwhelming effect on your physique. We can go back and forth on the fact that you think he looks shitty and what not. So I guess it's just a matter of opinion. But at 6'4, 205 with about 7 percent bodyfat that is not being in bad shape. No matter how you look at it.
Back to the dirty drop. I promise you that there are many others using gear that are just able to pass the drug tests being dirty. I for one passed many drug tests in college while still using gear.
I'm not trying to be argumentative here. The guy just deserves a little respect. I can't help but to be annoyed at people who criticize a pro athlete as they sit on the couch eating doritos.

7% bodyfat? It's gotta be close to double that! Either way he cheated and still got his ass kicked and it seems he's relying on drug use lately instead of hard work like everyone else. Maybe if he gets clean and gets in real shape like the winners on the card he may win one someday. Otherwise he will continue to be a loser! In the end, he cheated, doesn't matter if I or anyone else thinks its horseshit because in my opinion if it were legal I think everyone should do it and we would have a more brutal sport which everyone likes anyway! Bring on the freaks like Pride! >:( >:( >:( That's my take...after all this is a board of opinions! ;D ;D ;D

Why would you give respect to a punching bag... Bonner is a joke.. yeah yeah he'd beat my ass. whatever , look at the man's skills, his ability has hardly gotten better since TUF. second forrest just beats his face in everytime.. and i agree with the other guys he does look like shit. 7% body fat. and i have Ronnie Coleman arms. gimmie a break Chuck's gut looks way better then old bonner's, ands chucks gut looks like shit... Bonner needs to train harder then maybe he would win a fight... They should cancel his contract and put him on TUF then maybe he would look okay as fighter and get some W's in his column.... Barnabas sorry to bag on your favorite fighter...... keep cheering for him, maybe you'll give the guy a reason to win and not be a PUNCHING BAG!!!!! GO BONNER GO!!!!!!

though he has been caught red handed i fail to see why any fighter would use equipoise for any sport of gains in martial arts, its not the right kind of drug for this sport. Anabolicwise it is weak as piss meaning he wouldnt get overwhealmingly strong, improve endurance but not by loads and lets face it with his fighting style he didnt want it to go for a marathon.
What he did was wrong but are we judging him with all the guys like kimo who juice for obvious size/strength reasons when this plainly isnt one of those cases.
-
Kimo, Stephan, Tim Sylvia - drug cheats that have never gotten an advantage from using them. The best fighters dont need anything to enhance their performance, although Mark Kerr did say his pain threshold went through the roof after using. But he was always a dominant fighter
