Corrected Obesity Statistics

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI)body mass index (BMI) over 30, according to the CDC.

In 2002, 28.7% of men and 34.5% of women in the U.S. were obese, Ezzati and colleagues estimate.

The uncorrected estimate for that year indicated that 16% of men and 21.5% of women were obese.

Ezzati's team based their corrections on data from two large, national surveys of U.S. adults:

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS): Given by telephone
National Health and NutritionNutrition Examination Survey (NHANES): given in person, with some participants measured and weighed afterwards

Ezzati and colleagues compared BRFSS and NHANES data for similar years. They found that people tended to report their height and weight more accurately in person than over the phone, but that all self-reports generally missed the mark.

Weight, Height, and Reality

Women tended to underreport their weight, the study shows. Men didn't do that, but men aged 20-44 tended to overestimate their height more than women, especially in telephone interviews.

After age 44, men and women overestimated height to a similar extent. Height often dips with age. Middle-aged or older adults who haven't measured their height lately may mistakenly think they're still as tall as in their youth, the researchers note.

Such errors stack the deck in favor of a lighter BMI (body mass index). BMI is calculated based on height and weight. A BMI of more than 25 but less than 30 is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

There are other ways to calculate size and shape, such as comparing waist size to hip size. But researchers often use BMI to track obesity.

If height and weight aren't right, neither are BMI and obesity statistics. It's like looking in a circus mirror that makes us look taller and leaner than we really are.

Where Obesity Lives

Ezzati and colleagues identified the states (and Washington, D.C.) where obesity was most common in 2000, based on the new calculations. Here are those findings, along with the percentage of obese men or women in those areas.

Highest prevalence of obese men:

Texas (31%)
Mississippi (30%)

Highest prevalence of obese women:

Alabama (37%)
Washington, D.C. (37%)
Louisiana (37%)
Mississippi (37%)
Texas (37%)
South Carolina (36%)

Lowest prevalence of obese men:

Colorado (18%)
Washington, D.C. (21%)
Montana (21%)

Lowest prevalence of obese women:

Montana (16%)
Colorado (24%)
Massachusetts (27%)

Obesity in the West
In the United States, obesity is the most common chronic disease, affecting more than 1 in 4 of all Americans, including children, and its incidence has been steadily increasing for the past 20 years. In Europe, Australia/New Zealand, the Middle East, and the remaining portions of the Americas, the occurrence of obesity appears to be increasing and is now between 10 and 20 percent. The prevalence of obesity is still fairly low in China, Japan, and many countries in Africa.

Genetic Causes of Modern Obesity
.

The  fact that obesity has increased so much in the last few decades appears to discount genetics as the main cause. According to Stephen O'Rahilly, professor of clinical biochemistry and medicine at Cambridge University, the influence of genetics on modern levels of obesity is insignificant:

"Nothing genetic explains the rise in obesity. We can't change our genes over 30 years."

Eating too many calories for our energy needs must be a major candidate for the main cause of the modern obesity epidemic. According to Dr. Marion Nestle, Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies at New York University, US agribusiness now produces 3,800 calories of food a day for every American, 500 calories more than 30 years ago — but at much lower per-calorie costs.

This thread brings up an interesting point.  One of the considered causes of the obesity problem is the prevalence of fructose in the modern diet.  The amount of fructose consumed by the average American is exponentially greater than it was early in the 20th century and correlates quite well with the increase in obesity.

So, you may wish to reconsider your ice cream habit...

I am in a Caloric Defecit.  Your logic does not apply.

Furthermore Fructose is not found in Ice Creams.

hahahahhah   Do you have ANY idea what you are talking about?

People are fat because they aren`t burning what they take in. Simply put they are overeating, Protein,Carbs and Fats.

One reason it's so bad here in the south is that no one has to walk anywhere, almost everyone has a car and everything is so spread out that you have to drive instead of, god forbid, burning a calorie walking there.  It cracks me up at work watching the big'uns take the elevator to the smoking patio and back...haha...they get out of breath walking through the cube farm to get to the elevator!

Obesity stems from cultural and societal norms as well.

Anyone can be in single digit bodyfat without exercise,no matter the age or gender.

There is only one excuse for being overweight.

Lets say the Average dork goes to Outback.

He Decides to Order the Outback Special  810 Calories.
Blooming onion   Calories 2210
Baked Potato       Calories 400
Bread on the table-Calories 400
Coca Cola- 100 per 8 oz
Desert-Choclate Thunder from Down Under-Calories 1220

hahhahhahahah- If he eats all of that-5140 calories
hahaha If he eats just half- 2570
hahhahahah if he eats Half of the half even-1285

hahhahahahahahahhahahah

That one meal has significantly put Mr. Dork over the edge into calorie saving mode.  It is doubtful that he would be able to burn off that meal for at least 3 days or so.

You pay for it even days after.

hahahahhah   Do you have ANY idea what you are talking about?

People are fat because they aren`t burning what they take in. Simply put they are overeating, Protein,Carbs and Fats.

I used the ice cream idea to describe what I had thought you had written that junk foods are the way to go.  Am I mistaken?

Next, what do you think corn syrup is?  Perhaps you need an example:

Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream made from real cream.

INGREDIENTS: Milkfat and Nonfat Milk, Corn Syrup, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Strawberry Puree (high fructose cron syrup, strawberry puree, artificial flavor, locust bean gum, and red #40), Whey, Cocoa (processed with alkali), Mono- and Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Cellulose Gum, Carrageenan, Artificial Flavor, Red #40, Blue #1, and Annatto Color. freeze dried ice cream, space ice cream, astronaut ice cream, dehydrated ice cream

If you are in a caloric deficeit then you should not waste your time with empty calories.  Foods like ice cream which are high in sugar and fat and provide little in the way of micronutrients are not the best way to a leaner, healthier you.  You can enjoy them sparingly but the majority of your caloric intake should concentrate on foods which have been minimally processed and are relatively low in fat.

Yes, I KNOW a lot about what I speak.

Most bodybuilders and gym owners know almost nothing about obesity and how to reverse it. It is a huge problem and an insideous one. The stereotype of fat people is about as accurate as the one about musclemen. If we approach obesity from the laws of physics it seems to be a simple equation. However, in real life it is far from that. The reasons people get large are varied but of course overeating and underactive are always there. That does not mean fat people should workout more and hard. Why? Well, many cannot do exercise that would benefit them for various reasons. Sore knees and joints and other problems. Plus, they don't feel comfortable going to a gym. If the attitudes displayed here re fat people are any indication of what America feels about fat people then no wonder they stay away from the very places that would benefit them. They clearly see the distaste and repulsion so many have.

Fat people are very aware of what others think about them. For some strange reason the women don't fancy bodybuilders, either. However, they are no different from their thinner sisters who also shun bodybuilders.

I have found the attitudes towards fat people here nothing short of bigotry and that is disgusting for those of us who train in gyms to improve ourselves. Why should we put anyone down? There are on line sites where those fat people would tear your arguments apart. I think a bit of tolerance and respect is something we can never have enough of.

OMG...dude.  Let me tell you how I see it.  I was once overweight but i fixed that.

My disrespect of obese individuals is on a case by case basis.

For instance, I'm repulsed when I'm at work and this 400 lb. big'un walks by my cube on her way to the smokers patio and it shakes the floor so bad my monitor on my PC shudders.  It also pisses me off b/c every time she shuffles past she stares in my cube to see what I'm doing or what I'm eating!

On the flip side, I spent at least an hour emailing back and forth with another girl at work who is trying to lose weight, is a single mom and has limited time/resources.  I'm trying my best to help her see that she doesn't have to fast, crash diet, etc. to lose weight but that it's going to take time and consistency to reach her goals.

So, in short, the attitudes towards obesity you see displayed here on GETBIG probably are indicative of how Americans feel towards fat people.  Fat people are going to continue to be that way unless they want to help themselves, there's no excuse for it anymore with all the online resources on how to lose weight.  I don't put any of them down if they're trying to change and I would never put them down verbally anyways.  So the views you see expressed by some on this site are not necessarily the views of all registered here and especially not all Americans.

Everyday you hear about obesity becoming an epidemic among the youth, I remember not even breaking a sweat in gym class. I think the fitness industry is sitting on a cash cow that has yet to be miled properly. Other than Zantrex, Hydroxycut and Xenedrine being sold by the boatloads, there is still alot of room for growth in that market. However, if people really wanted to get in shape, supplements are not even needed.

I used to be a PE teacher and there were very few fat kids in the schools I taught in. Those who were chubby just seemed to not like exercise as much and were always at the tail when running around the oval. So I guess when kids leave school they stopped exercising and playing sport and women sort of fill out and their hormones kick in. That many women have genes that store fat easily is great when resources are hard to find but in times of plenty like in America it is a curse. You people drive just about everywhere. In shopping centers you take escalators and so on. Even though you have the greatest number of gyms per head of population in the world it is clear that fat people don't go there. I suppose they don't like the idea of people staring at them. Same thing at the beach. You seldom see really fat people in swimming suits.

I own a gym and really fat people seldom present for exercise. Those who do seldom persist. Well, most people drop out. What you observe in every gym is that it is filled with people who look good. Why? Well, those are the ones who seem to keep going. Those who don't go don't look good so they don't want to go and not look the part. It is really sad and it really is difficult to get that population to go to gyms. If American gyms cannot get fat people to go then no other country is going to succeed because the population in America has been going to gyms for decades now whereas in other countries it hasn't been that long.

It is good to read that some people here do not put fat people down. We should be trying to help them but do so only if they ask. Can you imagine how many times fat people have to listen to others telling them about food and dieting?

What makes me aggravated is when you go to the grocery store and you can't even walk through the isles ! Lets see i am buying Whole rolled oates, skinless chicken breasts, a piece of fish , some ground white turkey , fresh vegetables , and maybe a pizza. Have a cheat day once in awhile.  Then the next guy is hey look new bagel bites , wow honey barbecue TGI friday's checken wings. It makes me sick ! It takes a hell of alot of effort to stay in shape and have a decent waistline. Its a real disciplined lifestyle. I do commend people who are overweight and getting to the gym though. The key is the food we eat !

I know its hilarious, how many Moutain Dews did they have before the smoke break.
