I plan to wrestle in college
« on: October 06, 2006, 11:38:59 AM »
Anyone here have any experience in competitive wrestling? I know I'm going to fucking own but that idea will have to wait until I get experience. Anyone have any advice? Good wrestling books? Anything at all.

how old are you, are you going to walk on. you better strt wrestling now and atleast get highschool wrestling under yourbelt. do freestyle and greco roman during the summer and get in shape. stop doing bodybuilding workouts and work explosive power like squats, deads, bench, rows, chins, dips, ect. i was a very decorated highschool wrestler and an ok colege wrestler. big difference in talent and work ethic. but if u want it you have to work hard for it

I wrestled in HS and lets just put it this way.  I started in 10th grade, had decent conditioning and was pretty strong for my weight class.  My senior year we wrestled the team that was ranked 4th or 5th in the state.  These guys start wrestling in the 3rd grade.  Everyone on my team got destroyed by these guys...a few of them were freshmen.  The guy I wrestled totally killed me and he was a freshmen.  He went on to place 3rd in the state and won it a few times after that.  There is alot to be said for natural ability and desire but overall it's experience that makes the difference in wrestling.  Unless your an absolute stand out I don't see you being able to walk on to a decent college team.  Most guys that wrestle in college are studs...plain and simple.   Sorry.

cldnt agree more. i started in 7th grade and half the guys on my team started in elementry school. we won states 3 out of my 4 years in h.s. 1 of the guys on my team went on to be a div 1 national champ. from cornell. (travis lee). he is also training for the olympics now.  others are div 1 wrestlers and past high school national champs. be prepared to get your ass kiked if you wrestling at a decent school. thats if you make the team

This is some really awakening reading. I'm going to wrestle without experience anyway. It's something I want to do so why not? I'm not going to make a career out of it, I just want to enjoy my college years.

If I have a good coach I'll be a real decent wrestler by the time I'm a senior. I'm definetely not stopping bodybuilding though. I can surely manage both.

well unless ur about 4-6 body fat plan to loose some weight cuz your coach will make you cut to a lower weight class, belivve me its hard to gain size and be lighter. but you will def be in th best shape of ur life. plan on doing alot of starving and running

That's scary, dude. Seriously. How can someone have the balls to tell me I'd have to lose weight?

Seriously, depending on how much wrestling suits me, I might just chill with the bodybuilding if I have to. To me, that's comparable to being neutered.

Why is weight such a big issue? Why isn't a big bulky bodybuilder a good enough wrestler's physique?

i know t sucks it pretty much works like this. when i wrestled (last year) i was 190-195 in the off season. i had abs. i could deadlift 455 for 5 reps, bench 295 for 5 reps, squat 365 for 6 reps and so on and so on. when season starts your coach wil take yur b/f and get a reading off the lowest weight you can get down to in regulation. you will also have to take a hydration test. this will tell you how much weight you could possibly loose. ne ways. every year every guy on my team and any other team i heard of, lost at leats 15 ponds. depending on ur b/f u might loose more. so i was weighing 190 with probaly 8 percent b/f. in season i wrestled 157 and i measured at 4 percent. youll loose some size and strength but ull def be cut as hell. and unfortunatly i lost the weight th wrong way. i would bing on sunday -tuesday. then have like 2 small meals wed. 4 really small meals on wed. and have a power bar thursday before practice. and then weigh in fri or sat. all why running and sitting in saunas to loose weight. this is why i quit wrestling. i wanted to move up in weight and could even beat the guy above me. but coaches will do whats right for the team.

I started in 10th grade as a 135 pounder, I wrestled my senior year at 140lbs, I told the coach I didn't think I could hold that weight and it was like "well, you gotta do what you gotta do".  So either I held wieght or I didn't wrestle.  I ended up losing 15lbs to hit 140 my senior year.  Brutal.

Wrestling is all technique and conditioning.  If I was you I'd learn some take downs pronto.  Really, adn I'm not trying to be a dick you're gonna get your ass kicked big time.  When I wrestled guys that were state qualified it was hell.  They're gonna eat you alive.....really, I'm not trying to be a dick but go into it to have fun, if you want to win...welll.......

i agree with you al he dosent know what hes getting into. i do admire you tho. just dont go in being cocky or expecting to be the best. go in wanting to learn and be th best you can be. just realize your about 8-9 years behind everybody. if you go in cocky plan to get thrown on your head.

this would be the best way to go about it.  At least learn the basics.  My first real practice we did 20 second "go's" to get takedowns adn I was gassed within a couple of minutes.  I wish I could do it over again cause I'd do it real different.  I'd be alot more aggresive and learn a ton of take downs.  There was this kid I saw and all he could do was a double leg but he was a total technition with it and he would just take a guy down...let him up...take him down...he won a ton of matches by points just like that.
