Since California banned weights in state prisons (1998 I believe), the opportunity for heavy lifting halted. Safety concerns were the main reason given. A DB or BB makes a great weapon (as well as BB plates) against the side of the head for a inmate or guard. Bwt exercises mostly now; chinning & dipping bars. Lot's of guy's are doing Hindu squats/push-ups, not for reps but for time. As 20-30 or more minutes, a session, of non stop bwt squats for example. It's not that they don't like squats or DL's, they just don't have the heavy weight present. I've been told that most of the prisoners who did lift heavy handled nears record squats/DL's in their regular workouts back in the day. And 400 lb plus were common for just about everyone. The main focus was on those Big Three lift's. Good Luck.
