Bas Rutten didn't start training until he was 28 yrs old.  If your training for self defense age doesen't matter, but if you want to fight, I think late 30's and up is a little to old to try and learn all the aspects of the game, because keep in mind, you will be fighting much younger opposition.

yea I figured something like that.. I'm 20 right now.. the thing is I wouldn't want to join a club because they're full of 8-12 year olds pretty much and that would just feel pretty awkward... but I've wanted to join since i was probably 8 and now seeing the shows on TV and everything it makes it even more tempting.. I'm pretty athletic and stuff as it is.. i play good hockey and stay fit.. i even did judo for a bit lastyear with a hockey team for our off ice workouts.. it was alot of fun

20 is the perfect age to start getting into it. If you have any potential and bust your ass for a few years, hell you could be getting shots at the big time by 24/25. GSP is only 25 if I'm not mistaken.

most people lose their ability to compete at the top level in their late 30's, the same in alot of sports. freaks of nature like Randy come up once in a while - look at Teddy Sherringham in the English Premier League. Chucks time is running out

If you have a Judo background, then BJJ would compliment it nicely.  There are many good fighters who are black belts in both arts, it will really round out your game as well.  The ability to throw, be explosive, have good grips will set up your subs.  Add in some striking, and clinch work and you'd have a complete game.  I would advise you to attend a group class.  You will get a lot of different bodies to roll with and spar with.  You won't pick up tendencies and you will improve faster.  (potential of getting hurt goes up as well)
