and i watched ufc 66 too!
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:42:34 PM »
i dont know if there's an ongoing thread so i made a new one with some comments while i still remember the fights

Michael Bisping vs Eric Schafer - bisping looks very good actually, looking forward to see more of him.

Andrei Arlovski vs Marcio Cruz - arlovski didnt win this fair, first he breaks the rules by kicking in the face while they're both being down, then he take advantage of the referee stopping and hitting cruz in the face when he wasnt ready, and lastly he hits him with one hand in the face - while holding the fence with the other!!

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz - titos strategy was the worst ever. standing and trading punch after punch with chuck in the perfect distance of getting hit...  ::) he did hit a couple of good kicks, and should've pushed the fight to the fence and try to get into clinch, there he could've done some damage.
stupid gameplan. chuck hits good but then how can one miss that giant watermelon head?

Randy was even saying during the Ortiz fight that he didn't know why Tito wasn't trying to clinch. He said himself that Tito has some of the best clinch work in the UFC.

yeah i mean chucks no 1 gameplan would be to keep tito from taking him down. and titos no 1 gameplan should be to not be in perfect distance from chuck trading punches, but that's exactly what he did... he should've been more agressive, going for the clinch, using more knees, kicks, elbows and that could've opened up the opportunity of taking chuck to the ground. where as trading punches in the middle of the ring... that leads nowhere.

but then of course i think tito isnt on chucks level. not only hasnt he fought that many good guys on the way to the re-match, but also his wins hasnt been dominating... he's known for his ground n pound but that only been the case against shamrock. winning by split decisions against forrest (where he might as well had lost) and tito belfort (who since then had 3 losses in 5 fights)  isnt that impressive.

Every time Tito shot for a takedown it was horrible, on top of it. He was coming from like 6 feet out and couldn't have telegraphed it more. Anyone could've gotten out of the way of those attempts.

Arona just resigned with Pride. He wouldn't get his just due in the UFC with them standing up fights more now and the fans booing any type of ground game.

US MMA fans don't generally appreciate the ground game; I get irritated as hell when UFC crowds start booing great grappling.  They'll cheer the hell out of 3rd rate boxing though...

Tito's a great fighter, but he respected Liddell way too much to ever have a shot at winning.

Arona is one of my favorite fighters. I've yet to see anyone control him on the ground. He might lay and pray his way to decisions, but I still enjoy the fights.

I have to disagree on the Arlovski fight.....Number one, the kick to the face did ZERO damage. After the ref stepped in and then backed away, we counted 4 seconds before he popped him in the head. That is plenty of time..Also, you are supposed to protect yourself at all times!

Cruz was just a warm up fight for Andre. He will soon be back in with the top players. (Silvia, Cro Cop, Vera)

I Think it was more like Tito was scared to death, to get knocked the Fuck out by chuck....

I agree, UFC fans do not get the ground and pound, way more exciting than watching two guys stand there and throw punches every 10-15 seconds, makes mma as boring as boxing, and everyone knows that is a dieing sport, Tito should have gameplanned better, but fight still should not have been stopped.

It drives me nuts. And, the UFC is starting to cater to those fans by standing the fighters up more quickly.

The problem is that most casual fans have grown up watching boxing and hollywood movie fights, and expect to see big punches. They don't understand the ground game. To them, it just looks like two guys rolling around.

This won't change until fans get more educated. One thing the UFC could do is throw in an occasional submission wrestling match with rules that encourage action.

Am I the only one that noticed on the takedown in the second round that Tito could have easily did a rnc?  Both of Chucks arms were down and Tito had his back!

it would have been very hard to get a rear naked choke on chuck at that point. they both were still going strong and not tired at all. chuck easily sprawled out of it. i believe thats why tito did not attempt it. anyway chuck may not be the best on the ground but i am sure he practices defending the rear choke
