China took out a satelite with a missile today
« on: January 18, 2007, 08:58:05 PM »

These might be the scariest f'ckers on Earth.

Today, instead of guiding an obsolete weather satellite to crash into the sea, they chose to use a ballastic missile.  It reached orbit, then launched a warhead which destroyed the satellite.

I don't have to tell you the danger of 100 of these ballistic missiles in space one evening, targeting our main comm satellites simultaneously.  We'd be crippled.

This is a good article.  China is making all sorts of little moves at once.

You are right to be concerned with China, let's all hope they can continue moving closer to democracy, and in turn more responsible to their people.

Think about this though.

We are a democracy.  We are hyper consumers. Our leaders have to beg, borrow, and pander to win the popularity contests known as elections, and the only way they keep their jobs is to cut taxes while increasing spending.  We think short-term.  And in the long-term, that leads to collapse.

With triple the people in a lot less space, perhaps a nice dictatoriship is what China needs.  Cause once their voice matters, their leaders will spend what they don't have to keep their jobs.  Then, when they need more, they'll do what we're doing now, and "outsource our needs to other nations".  IE: Take oil from iran/iraq to pay our bills.

Thoughts?

I disagree strongly.  Red China was a massive failure.  It's no coincidence their economic resurgence is in tandem with their progression towards a freer democratic government.  Both being students of the school of business, you and I know free trading markets perform better and increase the standard of living.  Dictatorships don't allow for this, and I certainly haven't come across a 'nice' one yet.

George Bush Sr went over there recently, held a speech.

Called himself a big friend of China (nothing really controversial).

Also called the Massacre on the Tiananmen square in 1989, Beijing, "a disturbance"... ::)

Good Lord.

I wonder how he refers to the Holocaust? A bad run for the Jews and Gypsies? ???

Hmm, looks bad, not sure from that article exactly what context he was putting that remark in.  Would like to see footage.  You're right to point out China's gross breaches of human rights in the 80's as inhuman.

China is medieval in many ways. Great economic growth potential makes every large company in the world extremely pro-China, and thus every nation at least not critical of China.

Sweden has the same problem, we should be tougher on China in our foreign policies. But fear of fcuking up for the joint ventures of Swedish companies...

Well, perhaps the increased Western presence will lead to democracy in the end still.
