What's happening to Tim is purely economical on the NBA's part.  A group or organization has the right to not support and or condone a person's behavior and the NBA is right in doing what they are doing.

This is NOT the US government telling Tim what he can or cannot say.

Aside from his comments being completely irresponsible he's put himself in a very bad position publicly-wise and sent the message that's it's OK to bash GAYs

You don't understand what the first amendment is all about. 

By 'protected', it means that you will not be prosecuted (except in the rarest of circumstances) by the authorities.  It does not, however, mean that individuals and groups who disagree with you must continue to do business with you.

I'm really really curious to see how this pans out, John Rocker (a former MPF client ) was drummed out of baseball for saying things that were ten times less offensive than what Hardaway said, I worked with Rockhead for almost a year after his surgery and I can personally say that he was a 360 degree opposite of how the media portraied him.
