pushdowns a most have for big tris?????
« on: August 16, 2007, 02:56:58 PM »
I was curious, how  important is doing a tricep pushdowns in you tris workout?? I'm thinking about  replacing it with overhead extensions. but, I've never seen a tricep routine without pushdowns somewhere in there. I admite that my tris need to seriously come up to my bis..

this is my current workout
pushdowns
close grip bench
skull crusher
weighted dips

I'm thinking about doing
close grip bench
skull crushers
overhead extensions
dips

I always feel wired when trianing tris b/c it always seems like its the only bodypart that I can't train all free weights like me others.

i just use them at the end just to push some blood into the muscle after close grips and either overhead or behind the head lying extensions, a few sets with the stack on the easy two pulley Flex cable.

Yeah I agree. Unless you have snow man style stick arms, I would never consider these a mass builder what so ever. Usually a good cool down or filler exercise. There's usually never enough weight for stronger guys to really benefit from them. I do them after all my heavy work to burn out the tris and call it a day. If you're looking for a good change though, they can't hurt. I find the rope pressdowns with a flare at the bottom to be the hardest.

You know thats right.  Last tri exercise.  Run through the stack decreasing 10 pounds at every failure.  Then look like a big pussy struggling with the 20-30 lbs pulldown at the end.  lol.  I love it.  Talk about arms ready to explode.

Yeah burning out like that will make your arms want to split. I don't answer my phone an hour after an arm workout because my arm can't reach my fucking ear after a workout like that. The hardest part to learn is to feel BOTH heads squeezing and don't let one dominate the exercise. LEarning that mind muscle connection can make this exercise a good benefit to your tri program but you're right..that shit BURNS! AND DON'T LEAN OVER IT LIKE A TOOL! STAND STRAIGHT UP AND KEEP THOSE ELBOWS IN TIGHT! Might as well do dips if you're going ot be leaning over it like that.

Yep I see several of these 13 inch armed warriors turning these pulldowns into a shoulder workout.

If you use a variation of pushdowns with the elbows flared and involving the shoulders they're interchangable with other exercises that hit the medial and lateral heads: close-grip benches, bench dips, dip machine or dips.

that's a good suggestion, i think it would be even more effective coupled with power rod resistance... does your gym have a bowflex?  this is really what's missing to take you to the next level, remember with up to 410 lbs of resistance it's a serious workout for your tris

hahahahaa, "wooo" is another tool who thinks because he does lying extensions with a quarter on each side for 7 reps that he's much too manly for the Bowflex, hahahaa, i'd pay money to see some of these clowns try to bench 315-350 on the Bowflex and watch their arms shake like a leaf and watch them huff and puff trying to get the rods to move an inch.

"not a mass building movement".

you are fucking retarded!!

every movement is a mass builiding movement. you cannot "eatch-in definition", and you cannot "shape" the muscle.  all you can do is build up what you have....   get some brains dumbasses!!

Agreed in general but have to admit after years of doing them that standard pushdowns aren't very effective. Better to either flare the elbows and/or do 1/2-2/3 motions on the bottom part of ROM.
