Andre Berto vs. Miguel Cotto? *spoiler*
« on: June 22, 2008, 08:17:48 AM »
I seen Andre Berto totally pick apart his opponent last night. Including throwing 5 super quick left hooks at the end of the 6th round, just awesome hand speed. He then knocked his opponent down twice in the 7th, which led to a referee stoppage shortly thereafter. I think this guy is as close to a Meldrick Taylor that we have seen in a long time. An Andre Berto vs. Miguel Cotto fight would resemble a Julio Ceasar Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor fight IMO. I still think Miguel Cotto would be too much for Berto with his brutal body blows, but man that would be a great fight!!

Berto will never beat an elite champion and will struggle badly against an elite contender unless he realizes he needs to clean up some holes still in his game.

I see no meldrick taylor in him what so ever. (IMO)

..and from what I saw last night..he hasn't learned a thing from that rivera knockdown a year ago....he still pulls out straight up and leaves his guard open (like roy jones jr which he is not and never will be) ..he still thinks he hits harder than he actually does (pulls back his right hand after throwing his straights and holds it up admiring his work...still seems to lose focus and a patient guy will always frustrate him especially when they don't fall from his shots that he thinks are hard.......he doesn't have good stamina (and when he fights a top 10 guy who pushes him you will see this I promise)

I wouldn't hold my breath on the day his handlers man up and pit him against a top 10 welter either. and I mean legit top 10 not some WBC rated ex cop..lol

It would be wise to keep him fighting all bum contenders now until he realizes he is miles away from the top guys out there now. He's a good fighter no doubt but not close to elite.

I agree, using lasts nights opponent as a measuring stick on how he would do against Cotto or any of the other top 10 welters isn't very accurate.  Clottey,Judah,Mosely,Margarito,Cotto,Williams,Quintana and even Collazo would give him fits or beat him.  He does still kinda duck his exposed head down while in closed quarters and leaves himself open for that uppercut that got him dropped the last time.  He's still a bit of a question mark in my book.

I think some of the negatives you can say about Berto is that he hasn't really fought any great competition yet. Maybe they are bringing him up too slow as well. His chin is a little suspect after that knockdown he suffered, but then again he did get himself up from the mat. Personally, I like his skills but after mulling over it a little bit maybe he is not at that elite level......yet. I don't know what to make of his defensive stance, does it remind anyone of Mayweather at all? The way he kinda leans back to the side waiting for the counter punch. I think he does have decent strength but not great, that first knockdown (plus his kayo percentage, albeit against lesser comp) proved that. I think a Zab Judah match next would give a better indication of how he stands plus would be entertaining given the speed both possess. I really think he has very very solid raw skills though. Plus he still is only 24 so I say give him a chance, but he needs to step up the competition level soon (as in his NEXT fight) to be taken more seriously.
