a friend of mine has her first figure show this saturday, i have competed for years and know how to prep for my bb shows, but her nutritionist/trainer bailed on her 2 weeks ago and i am trying to help her through this. I just cut her water down gradually starting this week and i am slowly drying her out, now as far as carbing up i need some advice. I was planning on keeping her carb epleated until friday night, then having her start eating rice cakes and oatmeal starting about 6:00pm friday night, and saturday morning. Any help here would be greatly appreciated

To be honest, you really shouldn't have to do much at all for a figure competitor, especially for one whose competing for the first time.  If she's lean enough and knows how to pose, that's really all that matters at this point.

Carb manipulation isn't going to make a HUGE difference.  If she's depleted alot and looks flat/stringy, then I would just get some carbs back in to her slowly, starting before Friday night with small amounts of carbs (maybe every other meal starting Friday morning) and using ONLY carbs that her body is used to taking in.  Have her POSE for 5-10 mins every time she eats carbs right after she eats.

Don't do anything major since you haven't been prepping her all along and since you are not sure what to do.  Dropping her water the night before the show is fine...that, when combined with some natural diuretics over the course of a day or two (dandelion, cranberry extract, Expel, Teraxatone, for example) should be plenty for a figure competitor IMO.

For her first show, it must be a local/regional show, and figure competitors shouldn't need to be hard as nails and dry to the bone for these kinds of shows.  She should just focus on getting herself stage ready and making sure her posing and presentation is as good as it can be, because anything else you do between now and then won't make a big difference in terms of making her look better, but could make a big difference in terms of making her look worse.

Sucks about her trainer...not cool!

Good luck.  :)

Hey Louie,

You and your friend might want to check out this thread we have on our site about water depletion.

http://www.bodysport.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=67

Not trying to whisk anyone away from here but this is a very important topic and a lot of incorrect information keeps getting passed down.  Many of the extreme practices, although people still do them unfortunately, really aren't and shouldn't be necessary for figure competitors.  It's about taking enough time to properly develop the physique, learning how the body really works, and using a sensible and knowledgeable approach to peak on-stage.  I have never "cut water" for anyone I've coached and they have never had a water retention problem because of it.  Once the stress hormones due to training subside (usually Tuesday is the last day of weights) and any extra sodium is removed they still tend to lose weight and get leaner while taking in all the water they want, and they're muscle are a lot fuller, tighter, and have better shape.

Also, an excellent point was made about not introducing in foods she hasn't had for some time, recipe for disaster.  And 3-4 days of depleting is never going to allow someone to fill out in 1 day.  Better to not even do it, you may be trying to fix problems that she doesn't even have.

Sorry if I am coming off like I think I know everything but I have been doing this for quite some time and I have seen people get led down the wrong path too many times.  I respect your knowledge and experience and the fact that you are trying to find out the best information to help your friend without assuming that you know it all because you have competed.  You sound like you would be her ideal coach.

i appreciate the responses and the advice. I have always prepped my self and my clients strictly for bb shows, the figure world is a whole new animal for me. This show is in fact a local show and last night we decided that this will be a warm up show, and i am going to help her with her prep for a november show. Her conditioning is awesome and i am going to take the advice and not cut her water as drastically as i wood for a show. I really to appreciate the help, that is why im a big fan of these getbig forums

Kevin and rip, many thanks for your input. We took 1st place at the indiana show, that was the first time i had to prep someone from over 1000 miles away via pictures and video.

Awesome Louie,

Congrats to you and her. No joke, I'm impressed by the effort you put in to prepare yourself to help her, the sign of a great coach.  And of course having someone with experience like Rip reach out to help her is what sports are all about.
