Obama signs democrat budget with earmarks
« on: March 11, 2009, 09:25:09 AM »
Well, after campaigning against earmarks, Obama signed the democratic omnibus budget bill today which is full of earmarks.  The bill that Bush refused to sign last year championed by Pelosi and democratic leaders.  He gave a nice speach about creating more transparency for earmarks going forward, which is good, but the fact remains that he folded and signed this bloated bill.  Change.

This one clearly lies on the president, he could have demanded the removal of a % of the earmarks.  Bush refused to sign this budget but Obama does.  Horrible.
Both repubs and democrats have earmarks in this bill.  More republicans have opposed it, but they are both guilty of placing earmarks.  We needed a strong leader to buck the system, Obama caved in.  I wasn't a huge McCain supporter but I don't think McCain would have caved on this issue.

I don't see why its acceptible to sneak in pet local projects in large federal bills appropriating federal money for these local projects.  Seems that it should be a state and local government issue.

I thought Obama slammed earmarks pretty hard today?
A number of concrete measures were also taken that I welcome.
Eg, making it easier for citizens to get access to numbers on where the tax dollars are spent and also making it easier - supposedly - for the average citizen to voice his/her opinion on the spending.
Ie, more interactivity.

In your opinion though, it was mostly talk and little action?

not mostly, all talk and no action. Instead of saying no to the earmarks which was a big campaign promise of his if you recall he passed the buck and said you guys deal with it.

Obama is the master liar.  he says one thing so it sounds good on the soundbite, but does the complete opposite when it comes time for action.

Look at what happened Hedge, he signed this bill loaded with earmarks and makes a nice speech about limiting earmarks later.  So people who don't know whats going on hear his speech, which sounds good, but meanwhile the bloated bill passes.  Obama is a master communicator.  We have to evaluate him on his policies.  Look, he made most of us think he would appeal to the center during the campaign.  Just about everything he has done has been leftist and he refuses to check Pelosi and Reed.  So much for being a centrist.
