UFC 7: Marco Ruas Demonstrates the Power of Leg Kicks
« on: April 10, 2009, 05:46:02 PM »
Yahoo continues it's UFC retrospective and this time Kevin Iole takes a look at what made UFC 7 unique: Marco Ruas not only used leg kicks to stop Paul Varlens, he did so before the true effectiveness of leg kicks were known in NHB:

Massive Paul Varelans, who is 6 feet, 8 inches and around 300 pounds, returns to the tournament competition after having been knocked out by Tank Abbott at UFC 6.

Varelans, whose nickname is "The Polar Bear," earned two quick submission victories to earn his way to the tournament final, where he would meet a highly regarded Brazilian.

This time, though, it was not Royce Gracie in the finals but rather Marco Ruas, who made his UFC debut.

Ruas, who would go on to become one of the top mixed martial arts fighters in history, also made it to the finals after a pair of submissions. He defeated Larry Cureton and Remco Pardoel to make his way to the finals, where he’d meet Varelans.

Ruas used a series of leg kicks to chop the much bigger man down. After a number of hard kicks, Varelans has difficulty standing and ultimately collapses to the canvas.

His well known pupil in Pedro Rizzo continued the leg kick tradition in MMA, although it's obviously a Thai boxing technique that wasn't invented by Ruas. I included a highlight of "The King of the Streets" after the jump. Long live Ruas Vale Tudo.

ruas was awesome, he used a very conservetive approach to most of his fights. he never took wreckless chances but waited patiently for openings and never took much damage to himself as a result, he liked to counter strike like rizzo his student did. ruas was more exciting then rizzo though, the thing with rizzo was he never pushed a fight and if his opponant didnt engage it would turn out to be a snorefest unfortunately. raus was funny about his age also, he would never give his age for some reason. i remember his footstomps on varelans also, they dont look that bad but they hurt like hell after awhile. i wanted to see raus vs ken or frye back then, that would have been some great action. i do think rizzo should have won that first fight with couture in atlantic city, i was there at ringside and as much as i wanted randy to win i have to be honest about the fight. randy started off strong and almost finished the fight in the first rd,or was it the second? it was awhile back but i remember randy looked like he wasnt even gonna come out of his corner for the following rd, i could see dan henderson and linland yelling at him to suck it up and get out there. randy blew his load trying to finish rizzo in the rd and admitted after the fight he didnt train properly for the rizzo fight and he said it was a gift from the judges, randy came back in the rematch with rizzo and dominated rizzo by stopping him in rd 2 i believe, i wasnt at that fight though.
