LeBron James named NBA MVP
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:50:38 AM »
CLEVELAND (AP)—Unstoppable at both ends of the floor this season, Cleveland superstar LeBron James is the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.

James, who led Cleveland to a team record 66 regular-season wins and the top overall seed in the playoffs, will receive the award Monday afternoon, a person with knowledge of the choice told The Associated Press. James has chosen Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater, as the site for the award presentation, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement has not been made.

James is the first Cavaliers player to win the award. The 24-year-old averaged 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists this season, his sixth as a pro. He also finished second in voting for defensive player of the year, making him perhaps the league’s most dominant two-way player since Michael Jordan.

At 24 years, 106 days, James is the youngest player to win the award since Moses Malone (24 years, 16 days) in 1978-79. Wes Unseld was 23 when he won it in 1968-69.

Focused from the start of the 2008-09 season, the 6-foot-8, 250-pound James sharpened his magnificent skills this season.

He started a career-high 81 games and set personal bests in field-goal (49) and free-throw (79) percentages. James became just the second player to post five straight seasons of at least 27 points, six rebounds and six assists. The other is Oscar Robertson, whose well-rounded game is the one James’ is most often compared.

James was in a three-way battle all season with Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and Miami’s Dwyane Wade for MVP honors. The trio—teammates last summer on the U.S. Olympic team that won gold—seemed to upstage each other on a nightly basis.

It’s not a surprise that the loyal James would select his high school for the ceremony. It’s where he won three state basketball championships and where he burst onto the national scene, becoming a cover subject for Sports Illustrated as a 17-year-old. He announced his intention to skip college in the Fighting Irish’s quaint gym and recently filmed a “60 Minutes” interview there.

Incredible player. Love watching him play. Will probably go down as the most physically dominating small forward in NBA history.

;) ;)
The Cleveland Cavaliers star won what some expected to be a close vote in a slam dunk. He received 109 of a possible 121 first-place votes to easily outdistance Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. James totaled 1,172 points in balloting by media members in the U.S. and Canada

LeBron earned it.

I would have given it to Kobe.  Still the best player in the game.  Finished 1 game behind Cleveland for best record in the NBA, gave Cleveland it's only home loss with LeBron in the lineup, played in a much tougher conference.  Played about 30 games without his starting center.

Kobe is sort of like Phil Jackson:  a victim of his own success.  How many coach of the year awards has Jackson won?

Lebron will never be Michael Jordan... there will never be another Michael Jordan. NBA basketball is so watered down anymore. Players leaving too early to enter the league. In the 90's (when NBA basketball hit its peak) there was only a handful of players that left school early.

Kobe might....Might... be a slightly better scorer. But in the other areas assist, rebounds, defense lebron has him.Lebron is an all around player and the best basketball player on the planet.scary thing is he hasn't reached his prime yet.

Can you imagine how good he's going to be in his late 20's?? Crazy to think about what more he's capable of. Depending on his supporting cast throughout the remainder of his career, he may be first player to average a triple double in a season since the big O. But that's unlikely if his teammates continue to get better because he won't have to do too much on his own. Very unselfish player and likes to get his teammates involved. He could definitely average 40 points a game if he wanted to. But if he did, his team would probably lose 15 more games than the 67 they won this year.

The offense he plays in is terrible, though. If the coach used a run-and-gun style(like Phoenix) and had more fastbreaks, the Cavs would be unstoppable on offense with Lebron.  I just don't understand why they walk the ball up the floor and have Lebron take on all five guys with his teammates watching. But the coach is a former defensive player so they emphasize defense.

Have to say I was wrong about LeBron.  Coming into the league, I thought he was going to be another Shawn Kemp.  I think it's a miracle that he has done as well as he has, and made such good decisions, with his background.  He was a disaster waiting to happen and turned it all into a pot of gold.

Cavs 99
Atlanta 72
Daaaaaamn  ;D
Newly crowned MVP LeBron James scored 34 points and the well-rested Cavs, who waited nine days between playoff games after a first-round sweep, pulled away in the second half for a 99-72 win over the Atlanta Hawks in their Eastern Conference semifinal opener on Tuesday.

Showing why he was voted the league’s best player in a landslide, James added 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals as the top-seeded Cavs won their fifth straight lopsided game in a postseason that has so far mirrored the best regular season in franchise history
