4.4 temblor rattles Riverside County

June 12, 2010 |  9:11 pm

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck south Riverside County on Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 8:09 p.m., about 12 miles southeast of Anza and 29 miles south of Palm Springs.

More than 200 people posted on the Geological Survey's website that they felt the quake -- some as far away as Anaheim and Newport Beach.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

that shit happens all the time.  4.4 isn't uncommon.  But I'm thinking the retard guy is autistic and who knows, he might be figuring hundreds/thousands of things we're not.  So I'll be watching come Sept.  Cali is due for the big one anyway.  Nothing we can do about that.

OK I will say he is autistic and is doing a lot of calculating...more like a SAVANT and has figured this thing out. These little tremblers maybe the WARM UP to the BIGGIE...lol. Lets hope not, but like you, I will have to keep my eye on this. I may have to take a sudden vacation to Las Vegas, California, Oregon, Washington state, Nevada, the Grand Canyon etc etc very soon, cuz according to this guy all of this will be gone soon...oh no!!!!

Japanese quake

TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 jolted northern Japan on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological agency said, though there were no reports of damage and nuclear facilities in the area were unaffected.

The quake, at 12:33 p.m. (0333 GMT), was also felt in Tokyo.

The focus of the tremor was 40 km (25 miles) below sea level off the east coast of Fukushima prefecture, on Japan's main island of Honshu, about 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

No tsunami warning was issued.

Kyodo news agency said there was no injuries reported in either Fukushima prefecture or Miyagi prefecture to the north.

Tokyo Electric Power Co's Fukushima No.1 and No.2 nuclear power plants were operating normally after the quake, a company spokesman said.

Tohoku Electric Power Co's Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi prefecture and Higashidori nuclear plant in Aomori also continued their normal operations, company officials said.

Nippon Oil Corp's Sendai refinery in Miyagi was continuing normal operations after the quake and there were no reports of damage, a refinery official said.

Japan Energy group refinery Kashima plant in Ibaraki prefecture, south of Fukushima, has been shut for scheduled maintenance and no damage was reported, a plant official said.

Sendai airport Miyagi prefecture halted flights briefly to check the runway before resuming operations, national broadcaster NHK said.

The bullet train that connects Tokyo and Aomori, northern Japan, temporarily suspended operations on part of the rail network after the quake, Kyodo said.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

In October 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the Niigata region in northern Japan, killing 65 people and injuring more than 3,000.

That was the deadliest quake since a magnitude 7.3 tremor hit the city of Kobe in 1995, killing more than 6,400.

Quake Hits Near India

VOA News 13 June 2010

This map from the US Geological Survey shows the location of the 7.7 earthquake near India's Nicobar islands

A strong, 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck near India's Nicobar Islands, initially triggering a tsunami watch for all areas of the Indian Ocean.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury, and the tsunami warning was eventually lifted.

The quake, which struck early Sunday, was centered 150 kilometers west of Mohean on the Nicobar Islands at a depth of 35 kilometers.

The Nicobar Islands make up a small chain that runs across the Andaman Sea near southern Thailand.

Elsewhere on the globe, earthquakes took place in Japan and California Sunday, but no injuries or building damage were reported in either location.

A 6.1 magnitude quake jolted northern Japan, while a 4.4 earthquake was felt in the southwestern U.S. city of San Diego.

Maybe oil in the ground works the same way it does in a car... reducing the friction of all the moving parts? ???

Maybe all that oil spewing into the Gulf is causing all the worlds tectonic planes to rub against each other?  :o

Shake and Bake California just Shook some more with a 5.7 quake. You might be right Jag that all of that oil plays a part in tectonic plate movement. Less oil=less lubrication=more sticky continental plate movement=plates rub and get stuck=earthquakes

3 killed, homes damaged in Indonesia quakes

Quake kills two in Indonesia AFP/File – A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, triggering a localised tsunami warning …

By ALI KOTARUMALOS, Associated Press Writer Ali Kotarumalos, Associated Press Writer – Wed Jun 16, 8:28 am ET

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A series of powerful earthquakes hit Indonesia on Wednesday, killing at least three people, damaging hundreds of homes and triggering a brief tsunami warning that sent residents fleeing to high ground. Rescue officials said the death toll could climb, with several hard-hit remote areas yet to be reached.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck beneath the ocean floor off the northern coast of Papua province at around noon Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website. A series of strong aftershocks followed, the highest measuring 6.4, adding to the widespread panic.

One of the victims was a 5-month-old baby, crushed by rubble when his family house collapsed on Yapen, an island closest to the epicenter, said Priyadi Kardono, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. A woman also was killed, he said, and several people were hospitalized in critical condition.

More than 500 island homes were damaged, he said, many of them badly.

Sumpeno Yuwono, a top search and rescue official, said if reports from village chiefs were correct, almost all houses in nine yet-to-be-reached villages along Yapen's southern coast also suffered significant damage.

"Some even reported that houses were flattened," he said, as officials rushed to the area. "If this is true, I think there should be many casualties there."

Elsewhere, on the island of Biak, hundreds of people ran out of their homes as the ground started to rumble, said resident Yan Pieter Yarangga. Fearing a tsunami, people fled beaches and some raced for high ground. Many did not head back until long after tsunami warnings were lifted.

When the electricity was cut, some women and children screamed in terror, said Sgt. Junaidi, a local police official, who also goes by one name. "Many were crying, they were so afraid."

The U.S. Geological Survey said the massive quake was centered 18 miles (29 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor and 125 miles (195 kilometers) from Papua.

Several hours earlier, a magnitude-5.3 quake on Sulawesi island, nearly 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) to the west, triggered landslides that seriously damaged at least 50 buildings, including an elementary school, killing one person, said Kardono, the National Disaster Management Agency spokesman.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that make the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity. A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh.
