Dems to meet with Obama on DREAM Act, immigration push

Democrats on both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue are poised to launch an eleventh-hour effort to pass an immigration reform bill this year.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J) and Reps. Nydia Velasquez (D-N.Y.) and Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) are scheduled to meet with President Obama at the White House on Thursday afternoon to discuss the DREAM Act.

The bill, which would would allow the children of illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. before the age of 16, who have stayed in the country 5 consecutive years and who graduate from high school to obtain green cards, putting them on a path to citizenship, will be debated next week as an amendment to the defense authorization bill.

Gutierrez told reporters Thursday that he is hopeful that the measure will attract 60 votes though he acknowledged that the White House will need to be heavily involved to push the bill to passage.

Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) support the DREAM Act, as does Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who put it on the upper chamber's schedule next week.

With comprehensive immigration reform dead in this Congress, the DREAM Act is seen as an incremental step toward changing the nation's immigration laws.

Gutierrez said he is planning on campaigning for Reid in Nevada next month.

I heard Obama on the radio screaming about how he still plans on going after amnesty.

I am convinced he is not running for a second term if he pursues this.

Was talking to someone the other day who believes Obama has no intention to run for a second term, and that he wants to try and radically transform the country.

Obama: I'm not walking away from immigration reform
www.yahoo.com

By Jeff Mason Jeff Mason – Wed Sep 15, 9:38 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama assured Hispanics on Wednesday he was not walking away from immigration reform while expressing disappointment that he had not delivered on a 2008 promise to overhaul U.S. policy.

Obama, a Democrat who is ramping up his rhetoric against Republicans ahead of November 2 congressional elections, said only cooperation from both parties would allow reforms to advance.

He blamed Republicans for backing away from reform and urged Hispanics -- an important and growing voting bloc -- to continue giving him the support they gave during his presidential campaign.

"Now, I know that many of you campaigned hard for me, and understandably you're frustrated that we have not been able to move this over the finish line yet. I am too," he told a gala dinner for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, referring to immigration reform.

"But let me be clear: I will not walk away from this fight. My commitment is getting this done as soon as we can. We can't keep kicking this challenge down the road."

Immigration reform was one of a list of campaign promises Obama sought to realize after taking over the White House in 2009. But the issue largely fell behind other policy priorities such as healthcare and financial reform.

Obama blamed Republicans for slow progress on the issue and, putting a spin on his "Yes we can" campaign slogan, said the opposition party had adopted a platform of "no se puede" which, translated from Spanish, means roughly "No we can't."

"Is that a bumper sticker you want on your car?" he said.

Republicans, who could win majorities in both houses of Congress in November, stress that the United States has to secure its borders before tackling immigration reform on a broader scale. A Republican-controlled Congress would make it more difficult for Obama to achieve his policy goals.

Obama said disappointed supporters should keep pressuring him and his party to advance reform, but he urged them to stick with Democrats.

"You have every right to keep the heat on me and keep the heat on the Democrats, and I hope that you do," he said.

"But don't forget who is standing with you, and who is standing against you. Don't ever believe that this election coming up doesn't matter. ... Don't forget who your friends are."

I really hope the Nevada voters send Reid home.

Reid, McCain Spar Over Immigration Add-On in Defense Bill
Published September 16, 2010
FoxNews.com

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. John McCain escalated a confrontation Thursday over the Democratic leader's move to give some illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, with the nation's military budget hanging in the balance.

Reid announced this week that he would attach to the defense authorization bill a program to grant young people who join the military or attend college legal status. This drew outcry from Senate Republicans already miffed over an add-on that would repeal the "don't ask, don't policy" barring gays from serving openly in the military. They say the so-called DREAM Act needlessly politicizes the blueprint for military spending.

McCain, in keeping with his threats, objected Thursday when Reid tried to call up the defense bill. This prompted Reid to try forcibly advancing the bill to debate with a vote next week.

Reid then singled out McCain in a written statement, urging the former prisoner of war to listen to his patriotic side.

"Any American so courageous and patriotic that he or she wants to serve our country in the military should be able to do so. Senator McCain and anyone else who thinks the DREAM Act is not directly related to our national security should talk to the brave young men and women who want to defend our country but are turned away," Reid said. "Senator McCain should know better than anyone that patriots who step up to serve our grateful nation should be offered a path to citizenship, and that anyone who volunteers to serve should be welcomed regardless of their sexual orientation."

But Republicans, including McCain, say Reid is just trying to shore up his reelection bid against Sharron Angle in Hispanic-heavy Nevada.

McCain, in an interview set to air Thursday with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren, explained that his objection concerns process, not substance.

"It may have merits or demerits depending on how you look at it. But to put it on a defense bill? And so it's really his effort to get re-elected," McCain said. "And he's doing that at the expense of this legislation, which is about the men and women who are serving in the military. It's really remarkable."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told Foreign Policy's The Cable blog that Reid is trying to "check a box with the Hispanic voters."

Under the DREAM Act, anyone who came to the United States when they were under 16 years old and has lived in the country for five years would be eligible if they join the military or attend college for at least two years.

Those who qualify would be granted conditional residency and after nearly six years would be able to apply for permanent residency. From there, they could apply for citizenship.

President Obama voiced support for the policy in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Wednesday.

"I've been a supporter since I was in the Senate, and I will do whatever it takes to support the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' efforts to pass this bill so that I can sign it into law on behalf of students seeking a college education and those who wish to serve in our country's uniform," Obama said. "It's the right thing to do. We should get it done."

McCain frequently takes heat from Democrats when it comes to immigration because he previously worked in-depth on a comprehensive immigration overhaul with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. He was accused of taking more conservative positions on immigration issues during his Republican primary campaign, from which he emerged victorious last month.

As the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, his position on the defense bill is attracting heightened attention.

A gay rights group called GetEQUAL also confronted McCain Thursday during a committee hearing over his "don't ask, don't tell" position, urging him to support repealing the policy.

McCain says he wants to wait for the Pentagon to complete its study on repealing "don't ask, don't tell" before voting on any change.
