The Daily Beast has a piece by Allison Samuels that puts the Cain marriage under the microscope. And it’s an image that is at odds with the one presidential hopeful Herman Cain has offered. Based on anonymous interviews with family friends, the article suggests that the Cains have essentially lived separate lives for quite some time, rarely appearing together at all in Atlanta, according to Atlanta-based Rev. Joseph Lowery, a civil rights icon. The piece also says that the recent infidelity charges have shaken the Cain’s marriage, and have long been an issue. Cain has denied having had an affair with Ginger White, an Atlanta women has claimed that the former Godfather’s CEO provided her with gifts and cash over the course of a 13-year casual sexual relationship. Several women have also accused him of sexual harassment. He denies all the charges. Key passages from the Daily Beast article: “A close friend of one Cain’s two children explained that Herman and Gloria Cain’s marriage has seen its share of trouble over the years and his attraction to other women always played a huge role in the friction. ‘It never felt like a real marriage when I was around them,’’ says the friend. ‘Mostly he was always gone and his wife seemed to be OK with it. Not being together seemed the norm for their marriage, and Gloria didn’t seem to mind. His kids didn’t seem to mind either.’ According to Samuels’s piece, Cain’s wife felt pressured by the campaign and her husband to do a sit-down interview with Fox news that aired last month. Gloria Cain has been absent from her husband’s side on the campaign trail, yet the Republican presidential candidate has said that his decision to stay in the race will depend largely on his wife and family.
