Barnard College and President Obama: rude (and yes, lame.) And ready for the irony? President Obama is said to want to discuss women’s issues and the women’s agenda…and yet “big foots” an accomplished woman!

Read below and tell me what you think.

Here are the facts: Barnard College asks NY Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson to be its commencement speaker. Giving a commencement speech is lots of work and means giving up a weekend – but Abramson graciously accepted. Abramson is a big deal – she is the first woman Executive Editor of the New York Times – so this is a big deal for Barnard. And yes, having a woman Executive Editor of the New York Times is a big deal for women of all ages. She is blazing the trail. Barnard was very lucky to get her as the speaker and my guess is that others wanted her but she turned them down to speak at Barnard’s commencement.

Then some time later the White House calls Barnard College and says President Obama wants to give the Barnard College commencement speech. Barnard jumps at the chance to have the President of the United States, “trades up” and Abramson gets “big footed” by the President.

Of course Abramson can’t criticize this - so I will for her and for other women.

This is positively rude. I think less of Barnard for “trading up” and of the President for “big footing.” He could easily find another college to speak at (I bet he has dozens of open invitations) and Barnard ? Well…I would be embarrassed to be part of Barnard.

That's actually a good strategy.  It will show that Obama cares about women and that the GOP doesn't.  Between Rush's recent flap of the lip and Santorum's "Rape being a gift from God", its going to result in more votes...in addition, he's raising millions of dollars off this controversy as well.

Best thing for Rush to do is to drop it and move on or even apologize which that will never happen.

Sixth Advertiser — Carbonite — Drops Limbaugh Despite His ‘Apology’ Because He’s Beyond The ‘Bounds


Moments ago, Carbonite – a company providing backup software for computers – announced that it will no longer advertise on Rush Limbaugh’s show. CEO David Friend made clear in a Facebook statement that, despite Limbaugh’s “apology” issued tonight, the company was still pulling its ads because it wants to “contribute to a more civilized public discourse”:

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse

Indeed, evidencing the point made by Friend, Limbaugh’s “apology” is riddled with offensive statements, comparing contraception to “sneakers” and implying that birth control is only a subsidy for personal sexual activity.

New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson was all set to be the commencement speaker this year at Barnard College in New York. Then the White House called and humbly suggested a replacement: President Barack Obama.

The college quickly accepted the offer, bumped Abramson entirely and announced that Obama will receive the Barnard Medal of Distinction at the commencement ceremony. The award is the school’s highest honor.

The three most recent commencement speakers at the all-female Barnard have all been women: Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, actress Meryl Streep and Hillary Clinton.

Considering the recent controversy surrounding an administration proposal to require religious employers to cover contraception services in their health care plans, the announcement that the president was courting female voters isn’t surprising,

Unless, of course, you talk to Columbia University students.

“I can’t even [believe] this fuckery,” one Columbia alum wrote in an online comment on the story in the Spectator. “Why does the president consistently turn down speaking at Columbia?”

Columbia University, the president’s alma mater, is the parent university of Barnard College. Female students can also attend Columbia University, some students pointed out.

“As a graduating senior [at Columbia] who will have to listen to some random dude at commencement, all I can say is WTF,” another wrote at the Village Voice.

Columbia students had spent over a year working to bring the president to their school’s commencement, even organizing a letter-writing campaign called The POTUS Project.
