Land of the Free? America's prison-industrial complex!
« on: January 18, 2009, 01:40:01 AM »
America has the largest prison gulag in the entire world - yes, right there in the USA, the self-proclaimed "land of freedom." The starting point for understanding anything about the USA, is to digest the fact that just this one country, the United States of America, has twenty-five percent of ALL of the prisoners in the entire world.
More than 2 million prisoners - more than 1 out of every 150 people in America - are behind bars in the American gulag. This is now the world's biggest system of what are effectively concentration camps, though most of these prisoners are behind masonry walls and inside prison buildings.

Among those arrested for violent crimes, the proportion who are African-American men has changed little over the past twenty years. Among those arrested for drug crimes, the proportion who are African-American men has tripled. Although the prevalence of illegal drug use among white men is approximately the same as that among black men, black men are five times as likely to be arrested for a drug offense. As a result, about half the inmates in the United States are African-American. One out of every fourteen black men is now in prison or jail. One out of every four black men is likely to be imprisoned at some point during his lifetime. The number of women sentenced to a year or more of prison has grown twelvefold since 1970. Of the 80,000 women now imprisoned, about 70 percent are nonviolent offenders. About 75 percent have children.

Pot is not 100% legal anywhere.  There may be decriminalization but that is about it.  There is always some stipulation on pot that is a crime.  Wish it wasn't that way though.

Its pretty relevant so i disagree.

Amazing how so-called freedom lovers wants to ban everything and enforce it with prison sentences.

Just like 333... and the rest of the Neo-cons claiming they love freedom but is scared shitless of people who are different than themselves. Go figure

Almost 70 million Americans have some sort of criminal record, greatly impeding their chances for employment.  The criminal justice system is composed of multi-faceted layers of money making and federal spending, in spite of overall plummeting crime rates (thanks to abortions, moronic Republicans trying to overturn Roe V Wade).  The private prison industry(CCA, Wackenhut) and Bail Bondsman are but a few of the multiple private entities in the federal and state criminal justice moneygrab.  By keeping inmate counts and arrests high, it ensures police agencies, corrections, lawyers, and judges all keep the wheels turning as gross amounts of money are made.....in many precincts around the country, cops are making well over 6 figures per year...lawyers are making more.

One of the great impediments to the black community is tied up in the criminal justice system......ensuring a permanent fixture of broken families and communities as fathers, brothers, uncles, and employees are either locked up or kept from gainful employment due to having an arrest record(yes, a simple arrest disqualifies you from a plethora of jobs).
