The dude had drive, tenacity and determination that very few people have, but I believe that Arnold had an invisible hand guiding and grooming him... someone else other than Joe Weider.

I like the penultimate line:

"When you are out there partying, remember that somebody else is getting better, working harder"

And his exhortation to "not be afraid to fail".

TheShape.

I try to apply that to my life everyday.

Are you insinuating that he's a member of scientology?

No.  Something much greater than that.

I once had a theory that this Arnold Schwarzenegger got some help from the USA Government. They saw this young driven dude with muscles. They took him under his wings to have him as a role model for people and teens, give them hope that everyone can have a successful life etc etc...to make the poor people work and doesn't lose faith!

The whole society would collaps if all people realized that their future in life will just be a big struggle 9 out of 10 days and then die! : )

my opinion is that Arnold just got very lucky...not lucky in the sense that success fell into his lap...lucky in that he was ready for success when the time came...for instance, He happened to arrive just as the big budget action movie genre was taking off....he was ready for it because of all the past hard work he had done...he was the biggest and freakiest mofo out there so when Conan the Barbarian came up, he was there, he was perfect for the role and he was ready.......Arnold put himself in the position where he was right there when a new money-making venture started....the blockbuster action movie...the rest is history

Same with guys like Bill Gates who was right there when the personal computer and software really took off...all those late nights of coding and studying computer software applications paid off and bill was right there ready to capitalize....all of bill's friend's were partying...he was spending overnights in the computer lab playing with software and coding.....again the rest is history

Like all of my childhood friends...computer nerds all of them, programming in the late 80ies early 90ies, now making nice money! All of them had jobs that was their hobby! All luck!

Arnold says what everyone expects of him saying.
He must have been quite the party animal himself and he never truly failed in his life.
I would take all his "life observations" with a grain of salt.

Arnold knew he could build a world class physique, he didn't have to hope or dream to, he knew he had the genetics (and whatever) to do it.  From there it's a big leap to the movies.. that was less probable in a lot of ways but by then he had a relatively large following.  So it was less of a financial gamble for Hollywood to put him in a movie.  Watch the scene in Pumping Iron outtakes I think, he is with Joe Weider at the Hollywood agent's office, and the agent says well what you have going for you is your existing fan base.
