Until it starts to actually tear, there are no outward signs. I think it can be diagnosed as it is developing in scans and things of the like, but they have to notice it first. When it actually starts to happen, it has the same symptoms as a major infarction (heart attack).

One of the causes of aortic dissection is a spike in blood pressure from lifting heavy weights in those predisposed. Imagine having high blood pressure then compound it by spiking it further by lifting heavy weights?
Bah. Sad but true. I try not to push it with the weights even though I compete in the local strongman circuit. I realize that, at some point, heavy lifting is not good for the heart. Not to sound wimpish, but with kids now, priorities have shifted.
