I'm surprised it has taken this long.

Me too. Oregon has been making state tax money off cannabis for many years.
1973: Oregon was the first state to decriminalize cannabis.
2014: Oregon voters passed Measure 91, which legalized recreational marijuana.
March 2016: Governor Kate Brown signed legislation that allowed for the sale of both medical and recreational cannabis from the same stores, marking the implementation of the 2014 law.
The Oregon Department of Revenue (DOR) administers the State Marijuana Retail Tax established in 2015, a 17% tax on recreational marijuana items sold by marijuana retailers licensed with the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC). Formerly, OLCC was an acronym for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
State tax: The state imposes a 17% excise tax on the retail sale of recreational cannabis.
Local tax: In addition to the state tax, cities and counties can levy their own local tax of up to 3% on recreational marijuana sales, provided voters in the municipality approve it.
BTW I am not a user of cannabis. Being somewhat old-fashioned, I am fine with enjoying the occasional cocktail, bottle of beer, or glass of wine. Moderation is key regardless of one's choice.
