Bodybuilding, most useless, time-wasting "hobby".
« on: July 12, 2017, 05:04:09 AM »
Who agrees?

Although I love it, and did one show, despite this love and enjoyment in it, I consider it to be one of the most fruitless things a person can do. And I'm not talking about going to the gym a few weeks like many ordinary people do.

Most fun things are pretty useless, but what's wrong with doing something that makes you happy ???

You do realize a hobby is something you get pure enjoyment out of, right? Otherwise it would be a job or a career. Most people who bodybuild will never make a career out of it, but will do it because its fun.
I actually disagree with you when you say its completely useless. You build your body, you diet down, you learn a hell of a lot about your metabolism and body in general. That's a wealth of information 95% of the population will never find out about. And if you like bodybuilding enough, you can find a way to make money out of it.
When I was a teenager I used to love programming. It was a hobby. I wrote code, when it worked it was such a rush, and when it didn't the challenge of debugging it was really satisfying. I decided to make my hobby my career, and here I am, a programmer making money doing something I would do for fun anyway. Then I found lifting weights and bodybuilding. I got in touch with a supplement company after my first show and now work for them part time, making money using another hobby.
Its all about how you use your skill. Either do it for fun and nothing else, or find a way to make money out of it. Both things are perfectly satisfying and useful in life. You need to do something that brings you joy, and something that brings you money. Those don't always overlap, but when they do you've hit the jackpot in life.

I don't get it. People going to the gym a few times a week see it as a "hobby". If you take it further, it becomes a "passion". Not exactly the feel that you associate with the term "useless". Useless is if it becomes an obsession and you finally get to the point you contemplate the mess you created.

If you enjoy what you're doing...it's not "wasting time".

As a 99.9% natty, it is a big waste of time. Imagine using all those thousands of gym hours in a lucrative skill or craft? So much more beneficial.

you could say the same about any sport

there are guys in their 30's and 40's today that grew up playing football, both them and their team sucked and all they have to show for it today is pain in their knees, hips, and back and of course some complain of head trauma

no point in competing in any sport unless you have what it takes to excel

Guys get involved in it because they are insecure. They want to be thought of as a man and that's what muscles gives their ego.  Truth be told if you wanted to be able to kick ass instead of looking like you could kick ass you would be rolling on the mats at a dojo and boxing in a ring.

Having said this there is nothing wrong with training for health, strength and yes looks. It's been my life long passion and truth be told I have zero genetic potential to be a bodybuilder. I should have stuck with running instead of spending my life trying to put on muscle. What do I have for 40 plus years of training? A decent build but nothing that could win a third place trophy in a bodybuilding contest that was put on in a high school auditorium.

I think it was Arthur Jones that said everything has a price and everything has a value. If spending hours in a gym and not pursuing a real career for temporary steroid muscles it just isn't worth it to a rational person. Sometimes I wonder if I waste to much time exercising?  Then when I get a compliment on my athletic physique it feeds my ego and quiets insecurity where I can say to myself I'm okay.  Maybe on a side note I lowered the risk of ill health too.

I think a prudent path for many is a high intensity path. Something like Yates 4 day split with one work set. Work outs that last 45 minutes to an hour max. This will give you time for family and a career.

Then again it's obvious there is no right answer. If you train 2 hours a day six days a week and enjoy it obviously it's the right path for you.

I think building a nice natural base of muscle and maintaining it is a great hobby.  Using drugs and actually competing is useless, unhealthy and very wasteful in terms of all the food you have to eat.

Building a nice base and then throwing some roids would be even better. Surely adopting a bb lifestyle such as good food, proper rest is nothing but good for you, competing surely a waste in every department...

You have to go back to why people lifted weights to begin with. To be healthy and fit. When I go to the gym a couple of times a week (it is all I have time for), it is an hour well spent each time. I feel strong, structurally sound, and my mood is elevated for several days. I take brisk walks as well and use the stairs whenever the opportunity arises.

Many decades ago when I was a teenager, I wanted to be the biggest man alive, and dedicated way too much time to bodybuilding. Training 5 days a week, reading all the magazines, eating every 3 hours, stuffing myself with supplements. You learn very quickly that having bigger muscles doesn't make a man / success out of you and nobody else really gives a fuck if you added 2 inches to your arms. Train for health, and to feel good.

And ??

Bodybuilding clearly isn't for you, BBS, if you find it to be useless and time-wasting. And that's fine. But that's you.

This times 100

I have to say that I find myself shaking my head many times while reading getbig the last few years not because of outlandish posting but because of the incessant whining here by several about a fucking activity that this whole board is based on in some form or another ie bodybuilding/lifting weights etc

Like honestly, if i owned this site I would immediately stop banning anyone who trolls or is a gimmick, and just ban the fuck out of anyone who whines about training, lifting, bodybuilding etc.

reminds me of those youtube videos where they pre warn viewers who may be snowflakes to take caution and not watch this video because they will be offended, then 9000 of the 10000 comments are from those same snowflake fags who did not listen and watched the video so they could whine like little bitches

Don't like bodybuilding? log off and fuck off. If I was a mod I would ban your ass BBschmiel for acting like a 3 year old girl who missed the potty "again"  ;D
