So how do I connect it to my debit/visa card so I can deposit funds into the account?

LOL I just bit the bullet on cryptocurrency  at the end of last year. Opening the necessary accounts and linking them was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life.

Hah! Just notice that right now. Doggity and I must have had "things" in the past. It's all good.
I'm sure I had it out with just about everyone here at one point or another so I lose track. I pretty much forget about it pretty quick. Not sure I want to update that pic as I haven't got any younger.

never used bitshares, but you can buy money from any exchange and transfer it to your wallet

Use abra it’s very easy to use or coinbase if just looking to buy the main cryptos.

How? I click on Deposit/Withdraw. I'm asked "Please select coin you would like to deposit" (in this case btc).

Then I'm told "Please send your BTC to the address below". I am presented with a series
of numbers and letters with two boxes: "Copy Address" "Get new address"

Where am I sending to? What am I sending? How do I transfer funds to my account?

Copy wallet address then when you purchase btc paste the address where it says send to.

How do I purchase the coin? Where is the actual money coming from? In PayPal I transfer
funds to that account using my debit. Where do I connect my debit card to bitshares so I
can transfer real money to actually buy the BTCs?

I am not a cryptocurrency expert, but I do sympathize with op because I remember going through this process and how frustrating it was. It just did not feel intuitive to me but everyone I talked to, everything I read made it sound like it was the easiest thing in the world.

These "tips" may be worthless, like everything else I post on this board,  but if they help, great. The first thing is that I wasn't able to do everything on one site. I had to make accounts on two different sites. You had to transfer a purchase from one to the other. The other thing is that  I had to get verified by one of the sites by sending in my id, my bank/credit card info and I think, my ss card. It took about 4 days and I was anticipating it taking one business day.  I looked around and apparently the verification process is something you have to do in america. There's not an option to bypass it, from what I remember. I'm just mentioning these things because it seems like you might not have gone through these steps yet.

However, maybe bitshares is different. I set up my accounts to make a ripple purchase, then I eventually made a bitcoin purchase with the same accounts.  The steps might be diff if you aren't buying ripple. I think there was an extra step involved with buying the ripple. I don't remember that well. Hopefully none of this is helpful.

PS  If any of my info is wrong, at the very least people with more knowledge will start jumping in to point that out.

It can be very very easy if you don’t mind being tracked. Go the coin base, make an account, and link bank account. Then buy coins.

Really? Wow, when I signed up it was a major pain in the ass. I initiated the test charge at like 1 am and it didn't show up in my account until the following business day. Then I submitted my id and didn't get confirmed for like four days. HTexan's post is reminding me of another headache. I had started to sign up for one account, then I decided I was going to  do everything through a second bank account that I would only use for cryptocurrency transaction. After that account was set up, I just started another account, but coinbase was blocking me because I used the same phone number with a different email address. The only thing is they didn't notify me that they were blocking or why. Some of the stuff was specific to me, maybe. Bitsane is the site I used for the ripple purchase and that was a very easy sign up.

I saw a Bitcoin ATM a month or so ago. It was in a shit hole so I didn't pay much attention. Maybe I'll go back and see how it works. I can't update my phon so none of the crypto purchase apps will go on my phone.

Many of the crypto exchanges insist upon proof of I.D.  Kind of defeats the purpose.

Very helpful! I can see there's a lot more to it than I thought. Not sure if it's worth it right now. I'm
sure the process will be simplified as time goes on. There's really no sense of urgency and I'm
not one who is driven to keep up with technology. Shoot, I had a flip top, the same flip top, for ten
years and only upgraded when it just broke a few years ago.

Part of the thing that was getting me about the sign up is- if you remember the climate at the end of last year and beginning of this year- it felt like the last chance to get in on the gold rush. Every delay made me want to punch a hole in a wall. Honestly, I made a handful of purchases and haven't kept track of them in months. The fluctuations have just been too great, and I actually don't know if we are at a profit or loss right now. We spent an amount that was significant, but we were somewhat okay with losing. Me and my wife are just like maybe we'll just forget about them and one day, ten years from now be like "Oh. We're millionaires."

Well the real purpose of bitcoin, is 1 world currency, so no exchange fees in different countries, and not controlled by a government. It is also a high risk investment for some people.
Like I said, if you don't want to be tracked. It is a little harder.

Copy wallet address then when you purchase btc paste the address where it says send to.

Bought some Litecoin a couple days ago.

I was really impressed by Charlie Lee's recent interview on TenX where he explained he is looking to step down at some point in the future to further decentralize the coin.
