The Deuce
« on: October 29, 2019, 10:27:40 PM »
Did anyone watch this series?  It was only 3 seasons (HBO) and the series finale was Monday night.  I hadn't even heard of it until a couple weeks ago.  Once I started, I got hooked and binge watched it all in the last two weeks leading up to the series finale' Monday.  It is from David Simon (The Wire).  Anyone else?

Loved it. It's been one of my favorite series for the last 3 years, but nobody talked about it, so I've hardly mentioned it. The 3 season arc was perfect, and leaves you neither wanting more, nor wishing they cut it short. All the characters were fully drawn, and while it does make somewhat moralistic judgments on various things, it doesn't beat you over the head with them. Rather it just lays out a nearly full picture of the story, and lets the viewer decide on their own.

Like most of Simon's stuff, it will be better remembered in the long run. The casting was great (with real character actors), the scenery well done. Many younger people hated the pacing, but if you're willing to let a story build over 3 - 4 episodes, you'll be fine. Just excellent 70's 80's urban noir.

It feels sort of bad. This was one of the old line HBO series that was picked up before HBO got a shift toward being woke and more comedy based. Most of the writers are getting old, etc.... I hope they have a few more series in them.

I know spin offs and the like are often cheesy and suck but I think a prequel or a continuation would still be compelling and a good watch.
