Seems the media is responsible for selling this notion that all you have to do is bark at people you don't like and they will back down. Threaten them and they run. Knock down their statues and they won't do anything about it. My brother was a cop for many years. The stories of the abuse he got and how many times he had to hold his tongue while being screamed at for no reason were countless. It takes its toll. Unless you are actually a police officer you have zero idea. It's one thing to tell people how they should behave. It's quite another to be subject to it on a daily basis. Duh.

I agree that the police are or should be trained to laugh insults of this nature off and try to calm angry people instead of elevating the situation. In Portland, and I imagine elsewhere in most cities, people seeking work in law enforcement are given a comprehensive battery of tests in an attempt to determine if they are suited to the job, physically, mentally and emotionally. The requirements are high or should be. Unfortunately, when some people are put in positions of authority, it changes them for the worse. Rather than just requiring police personnel to qualify initially for the job, they should have to renew their qualifications on a regular basis. There are many professions where people have meet ongoing requirements in order to renew their license to continue working in their job.

Right now with all the protests and demonstrations going on and the media attention this brings, police are definitely in the spotlight. Any right thinking cop should know this is the worse time them to lose their cool because they will probably lose their job as a result and possibly be sued. I wouldn't want to be a policeman under the best of circumstances. I definitely would not chose to become a cop right now.

Defunding the police is stupid and dangerous. The people calling for this aren't thinking straight. Funding better and ongoing training for the police is what people should be asking for. Unfortunately, a lot of folks have it in for the police. They've gotten a ticket(s) they didn't feel they deserved or worse, been arrested for something they didn't do. It leaves them angry and wanting to retaliate. This is a no win situation between the police and the public that has to be dealt with. I don't want to live in a place where vigilantes rule because their are no police or where the police have no authority and no respect.
