A congressional candidate in Virginia may have an uphill battle going into 2018.
A federal grand jury charged Democrat Shaun Brown with fraud, theft, and embezzlement that allegedly took place back in 2012. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
According to the indictment, Brown was accused of filing fraudulent claims with the Summer Food Service Program as part of the JOBS Community Outreach Development Corp. by inflating the number of children from low-income families in their records in order to receive more money. Her organization received roughly $803,000.
She has denied any wrongdoing.
“We will vigorously defend. She maintains her innocence,” Brown’s attorney Jimmy Ellenson stated.
Brown is scheduled to appear in court Jan 12.
Meanwhile, Brown and her mother Jenever Brown have filed a civil rights complain against the USDA. They’ve accused the Summer Food Service Program of discrimination and are seeking $10 million in damages.
