how long does it normally take
« on: April 26, 2006, 06:42:40 AM »
to add width to your back? my middle back is very strong and thick...but after doing alot of wide grip exercises yesterday...i felt like a schmuck...my weights weren't nearly as big...and i realize now why i'm not as impressive as some...

if going ot predominately wider gripped exercises...how long do you think it would take to see improvement?  ???

weights moved and muscle size though usually go together does not mean they have to. most people work back incorrectly trying to move the most weight and not working the back hard enough. learning to feel the muscle and not over "arm" your back work is much better.

the real problem is depending on how long you have been consistent with eating/sleeping and working out that is when you will see results, its a marathon not a sprint most pros not named ronnie always complain they need to bring there back up, stick to the basics chins/rows/deadlifts/ect work heavy but controlled and keep your protien high and after some time you will see results, just avoid the mirror for the next 8 weeks.good luck

Pullovers...superset them with chins or pulldowns. in 3-4 months you will notice a big difference in your lats.

Work up to weighted pull-ups. Excellant lat exercise. Pull-downs, seated rows all good but go super slow.

As Overload suggested....Pullovers.  You can SS them with pulldowns  so the weight is adjustable  and easier to handle. A lot of guy's struggle with the chin with just normal sets. Might try to SS the straight arm pullover followed immediately with a set of bent arm pullovers. This has always worked very well for me. DB bent arm pullovers seem to allows for less stress on the wrist and elbow than a reguklar BB. Up to you which works best . In the bent arm version a lot of weight can be handled after awhile. Three to four weeks should be a good gage as to how well the pullover versions are working for you. You may also notice that the triceps and pec's are becoming larger as well as having better flexability in the shoulders and rig box. Abs are hit hard also.

If you wish you can do a tri set of: Lat pulldowns...medium curl grip
                                                Straight arm pullovers
                                                Bent arm pullovers.
Might try two cycles..no rest between exercises and 90 second rest between cycles.....7-10 reps. This can produce some pretty fast results for a lot of trainee's. Use Tri sets for a 4 to 5 week period.

A wider grip  will give a different stretch to the lats. Stretching  can have a influence on larger lat's (gymnist come to mind, as does cliff/rock climbers..if anyone is familar with that climbing sport).Stretching before and after a lat/back workout is a good thing. Thought  using a wider grip it's self, on any lat/back exercises, does not mean you will recuite the lat's any better. A medium grip for lat's work can be more effective for doing that. Good Luck.

i've always used a medium grip..and on exercises where i could use it last night it was very effective and i was very pleased with what i achieved..i actually could do 20 wide grip chins when i didn't think i could even do five...i've never done chins...but i guess like my bench helped..i'll move my grip out a litlte wider to span out my muscle bellies...

or maybe i just dont have the genetics for it?  i'm very very broad in my shoulders and high in my back...

Pullovers and chins are great, I personally think Pullovers are very underated.

begin and end you back day with 4 sets of pull downs.    first 4 sets heavy about 8 reps.   at the end light weight focus on using the back and contracting...high reps. 15.  pull overs are great for the front lat spread, but dont do much for the back double bi...and i assume thats the pose you want.

The basics always seem to work the best. I think once you get your chins consistant for 8-10 reps for 3-4 sets you need to grab the dip belt and add weight. I love the T-Bar row and the bent row for lat growth. I use the smith for bent rows and squeeze the sh%t out of my back. I try and stay flexed through the whole movement. Who cares about the weight. Building world class wings will come. Most people in the gym are hacks.  TEX just go slow man.

Hey AS pretty profound the whole "marathon not a sprint" thing I didn't know Marine grunts could think so profound a thought.  Have a good un.

Thats why here in DC every year they have the Marine Corp Marathon, we are known for "not just winning the race but for going the distance with style and grace"

thats why when planning a workout program or invading a country look no futher than the USMC (uncle sams misguilded children). :)

My back grows in spurts.  I'll be sitting there for a month then all of a sudden BAM, it just blows up and I add 20-30 pounds every lift.  As long as I have been lifting, this has by far gotten me the best results....

Front wide grip lat pulls 3x10-12 (none of this includes warmup)
Rear wide grip lat pulls  3x 10-12
Close grip front pull downs  3 x 10-12
T bar rows   3x10-12
DB rows  3x10-12

This has increased my width and thickness.....

Yeah it isn't like that now but those were the good old days. I've actually got one Marine E-5 under me know who's just coming in from "operation Mountain lion". You may have seen it on the news. Much to do about nothing. These Taliban and al-Queda  bastards don't congregate in any large groups otherwise we'd fry em  with air. Hard to kill to assh*%les in a cave unles you go up and get em. Anyway I'm supposed to get 2 more. Kinda nostalgic

I had an awesome back workout last night.  My advice is to go as heavy as you can without sacraficing good form it works for me.

ooking in the mirror day to day to see your size can be deceiving.  I feell smaller sometimes, and sometimes I feel huge.  It depends your mind can play tricks with you. You see yourself everyday.  My advice is dont pose in the mirrior a lot.  Wait for those complements and then look at yourself you will then see how big you really are.  My freinds tell me im huge im like gee thanks, I really believe it when i have my pic taken next to other people.

Keep at it bro
