CHICAGO (WLS) -- Fifty five people were shot, eleven fatally over the Labor Day Weekend in Chicago.

The shootings include an attack on four young men in the South Chicago neighborhood Sunday night in the 8600-block of South Kingston Avenue.

David DeVeaux Jr, 20 and 18-year-old Jason Mundo, 18, were gunned down while sitting in front of a home. Two others were also shot.

Police said at least two shooters armed with a rifle and two handguns walked up and opened fire.

One of the fatal attacks occurred in West Garfield Park on the West Side Friday evening. About 6:30 p.m., a 24-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 4400-block of West Jackson Boulevard when two cars approached and several people got out and began shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Early Saturday, a man was fatally shot in Old Town on the Near North Side. The man, 31, was found on the ground with a gunshot wound in the chest a few minutes after midnight in the 1300 block of North Hudson Avenue, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died.

A few hours later, a man, 22, was killed in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds about 3 a.m. in the 6000-block of South Racine Avenue.

In other shootings, a 15-year-old boy was critically wounded Friday night while walking on a sidewalk in South Chicago. Close to midnight, the teen was in the 7900-block of South Crandon Avenue when he was approached by four men and was shot.

An hour later, a 13-year-old boy was shot and wounded early Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood. The teen was walking on the sidewalk about 1:30 a.m. in the 700-block of South Kostner Avenue.

It's moments like this when you realize all of this is a complete cultural failure.

Who would let a 13 year old wonder around in the ghetto at 1:30am?

Terrible or non-existent parents, that's who.

The cycle will continue...

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot tells McDonald's CEO to 'educate himself' after he warns of rising crime
Fox Business ^ | 09/22/2022 | Andrew Miller
Posted on 9/22/2022, 10:30:44 PM

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired back at the CEO of McDonald’s after he highlighted the difficulty rising crime in the city has caused for his business, telling him he needs to "educate himself" on the matter.

"I think what would have been helpful is for the McDonald's CEO to educate himself before he spoke," the Chicago Democrat said during a media availability on Tuesday.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski warned in a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago luncheon last week that it was time to "face facts" and acknowledge that companies have been leaving the city over the past year due in part to rising crime.

"The fact is that there are fewer large companies headquartered in Chicago this year than last year," Kempczinski said. "There are fewer this month than last month."

Kempczinski also said that rising crime is hurting his company’s ability to recruit top talent and that employees have been hesitant to return to work at the downtown headquarters due to crime concerns.

In the press conference, Lightfoot also pointed to a letter from World Business Chicago President Michael Fassnacht that she says "lays out in exact detail all the good news, economic news, about what’s happening in our city."

"I’m going to focus on those things and not the comments of CEO of McDonald’s," Lightfoot said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Weekend gun violence left 31 people shot, five fatally over the weekend, Chicago police said.

Several children were among the victims, including a three-year-old boy killed on Friday and a seven-year-old boy shot on his way to church.

Police said the family of the seven-year-old boy was driving to church when they noticed a man breaking into one of their other cars that was parked.

They confronted the suspect, who police said pulled out a rifle and fired shots in the family's direction, striking the boy in the leg.

That suspect was caught by police and the child is expected to recover.

Casey Rodriguez, 30, was found with a gunshot wound to the head about 11:40 a.m. Saturday inside a home in the 2000-block of South Michigan Avenue, police and the medical examiner's office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

About an hour and a half later, a 30-year-old man was killed in a shooting in Roseland on the Far South Side. He was shot in the head about 1:20 p.m. in the 300-block of West 110th Street, police said. A 21-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds later Saturday in the same block. He was found about 9:05 p.m. by responding officers and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.

Early Saturday on the South Side, a man was shot during an attempted robbery in the Kenwood neighborhood. About 12:45 a.m., the man, 29, was walking in the 140- block of East 47th Street when he was shot as two suspects were trying to rob him, police said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition.

Last weekend, 38 people were shot, seven fatally, in weekend gun violence.

Top Democratic prosecutors revolt against criminal justice reform law they say will 'destroy' Illinois

A Democratic prosecutor is sounding the alarm over an Illinois law that will end cash bail

A Democratic prosecutor in the Chicago-area is sounding the alarm over a criminal justice reform law that will "tie the hands" of prosecutors and "destroy the criminal justice system in Illinois."

The Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act, signed by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, D-Ill., in 2021, will implement sweeping reforms to Illinois’ criminal justice system, though it has drawn criticism from law enforcement professionals across the political spectrum.

"I never, in my 40-years in this profession, ever thought I'd ever see anything close to this," Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow told Fox News Digital in an interview. "The intent of this law is to destroy the criminal justice system in Illinois, and I'm not going to let that happen."

Chicago Prosecutor Quits in Disgust: ‘Increase in Crime of All Kinds, I Will Not Raise My Son Here, My Entire Family Is Leaving’
Slay News ^
Posted on 5/8/2023, 8:08:25 AM by TigerClaws

A 20-year veteran prosecutor has quit the Cook County state’s attorney’s office and will move his family out of Illinois.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jason Poje blasted Chicago’s leadership and cited rising crime and the politicians who do nothing to stop it as a reason for leaving the state.

In a statement announcing his departure, Poje said he can’t raise his son in the state and is moving his “entire family” out of Illinois.

Poje sent a blistering goodbye email to 85 colleagues that said: “After 20 years, I always kind of figured an email like this would start with ‘It is with a heavy heart that I leave…’

“The truth is, I can’t get out of here fast enough.

“Let me start with the positive. There is not a single day that has gone by that I have not felt truly honored to work with such an incredible group of people who spent every waking hour on behalf of victims. This opportunity has been a gift for which I have no words to explain the extent of my gratitude.

“My partners, our Victim/Witness advocates, our Investigators, our support staff, the police officers and detectives, time after time I see each of you putting everything you have into helping people we encounter on the worst days of their lives. So often I see our personal lives, and indeed at times our own well-being, set aside just to do a little bit more on that last case for that last victim. It’s been nothing short of inspiring not as a lawyer, but as a person.

“And yet, I’m leaving. Why could that be? The simple fact is that this State and County have set themselves on a course to disaster. And the worst part is that the agency for whom I work has backed literally every policy change that had the predicable, and predicted, outcome of more crime and more people getting hurt.

“Bond reform designed to make sure no one stays in jail while their cases are pending with no safety net to handle more criminals on the streets, shorter parole periods, lower sentences for repeat offenders, the malicious and unnecessary prosecution of law enforcement officers, overuse of diversion programs, intentionally not pursuing prosecutions for crimes lawfully on the books after being passed by our legislature and signed by a governor, all of these so-called reforms have had a direct negative impact, with consequences that will last for a generation.

“Many years ago my family found a nice quiet corner of the suburbs. Now my son, who is only 5, hears gunfire while playing at our neighborhood park, and a drug dealer is open-air selling behind my house (the second one in two years). If it were just me to consider, I’d stick it out. I’ve been through stupid State’s Attorney policies before. But this Office’s complete failure to even think for a moment before rushing into one popular political agenda after another has put my family directly in harm’s way.

“The current people in charge of this state, including the [State’s Attorney’s Office] suffer from a fundamental misunderstanding…we live in a society with adversarial court and criminal justice processes. Defense attorneys, legal aid clinics, Public Defenders, defendant advocate groups…they fight like hell to protect the rights of criminal defendants. And they should. Their work is as noble as ours.

“But we have an obligation to fight like hell on behalf of the People. It should go without saying that this must be done ethically and even-handedly. When both sides vigorously defend their positions, a balance is reached between protecting rights while preserving some sort of order and safety. Once we start doing too much of the defense’s job, once we pull our punches, once we decide that it’s worth risking citizens’ lives to have a little social experiment, that balance is lost.

“The unavoidable consequences are what we are witnessing in real-time, an increase in crime of all kinds, businesses and families pulling up stakes, and the bodies piling up; the whole time with a State’s Attorney who insists that there is nothing to see here, and if there is it must be someone else’s fault.

“And then they wonder why they cannot retain experienced prosecutors or even hire new ones…it’s because any true prosecutor recognizes the importance of this balance, and that they will not be permitted to be a prosecutor under this administration.

“I will not raise my son here. I am fortunate enough to have the means to escape, so my entire family is leaving the State of Illinois. I grew up here, my family and friends are here, and yet my own employer has turned it into a place from which I am no longer proud to be, and in which my son is not safe.

“To everyone in the trenches in the State’s Attorney’s Office and in law enforcement, my one regret is that I cannot be at your side anymore as you continue to fight the good fight. I do not envy the task you have before you, but you have my utmost respect for carrying on. I hope one day you are successful at returning some kind of common sense and security to our communities.

“Thank you all so much for this opportunity to serve. I will treasure every moment of this chapter in my life. Be safe, be well, fight hard.”

CHICAGO (WLS) -- At least 14 people have been shot, three fatally, in gun violence across Chicago so far this weekend, police said.

In the latest fatal shooting, a 17-year-old boy died at University of Chicago Hospital Saturday after he and a 16-year-old boy were shot in the 6400 block of South King Drive at around 5:54 p.m.

According to Chicago police, the teens were standing on the street when they were both shot by an unknown suspect. The 17-year-old was shot in the chest and the 16-year-old was shot in the arm.

A woman was critically injured while trying to flee from a drive-by shooting on Chicago's South Side, police said.

The shooting happened in the West Pullman neighborhood's 12400 block of South Halsted Street at about 12:30 a.m., police said. A 19-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk when a blue Dodge Charger pulled up, and someone inside fired shots.

Police said the victim, shot in the head, ran to a nearby business, where she collapsed. The Chicago Fire Department transported her to Advocate Christ Hospital in critical condition.

Last weekend, at least 20 people were shot, four fatally, including a Chicago police officer, CPD said.
