I get it’s just an expression and I don’t want to be that guy, butI never understood the need some people feel to ask for blessings from a deity, especially the Christian variety.

Our nation was conceived by people who used their rational faculty, not divine inspiration. And it is where it’s at because of hard work by its people. God, as usual, was nowhere to be found, especially when the times were bad.

Happy birthday to our nation. It’s good to be an American. Now, it’s time for BBQ.

Our founding fathers were God fearing men, whether you believe or not.  That is indisputable.

That said, I don’t care what your beliefs are, I just wanted to point that out.

While some of the Founding Fathers were Christians, the most influential ones seem to have been more closely aligned with rationalism or deism. There are no indications that any of them were hardcore Christians, especially of the variety that's in vogue today.

That said, it's unclear what relevance their beliefs have in this context. What matters is how they envisioned and set up this nation. They could have chosen to explicitly designate it a Christian nation, but they didn't. In fact, it's rather obvious that they explicitly did not intend to create a Christian nation, which is hardly a surprise given the history they had both lived and learned.

As long as we each respect the other's fundamental rights and don't seek to force the other to share in our beliefs (or lack therefore), we're cool.
