I saw a 140 pound 70ish year old man sitting sideways to perform his 25 pound hammer strength lat pull down today.

Sounds intense

It goes without saying that if you stand in front of a Hammer chest press machine, you’re in perfect position to pull the handles towards you ...and carve in some extra rhomboid detail.

I typically don’t care how people use machines, but because of this thread it really bothered me. He did no pull downs; just the sideways version. And he sat on the machine for 10 minutes when I wanted to use it.

Charles is a good trainer, and a knowledgable guy who will evaluate your physique on its potential, he best identifies weak points and works almost exclusively trying to engage body parts from angles where they can neutralise other supporting muscles. Many people struggle to engage their backs,  etc, he can sometimes assist with adjustments to minimise delt or arms compensating movement.
He will also honestly tell you what you need to do on whats required and whether it's worth you pursuing it. Appreciate its not rocket science, but he cops a bit of negative press. He's a very humble guy, certainly worth seeking out if you have pro ambitions . Appreciate there are many others who are probably even more knowledgable these days. But he pioneered it back in the 90s.

What exactly is guys like prime jay, Doran, Phil, Ronnie, Shawn, Kevin, going to benefit from training with Charles?

Yup, they are taking over. Sitting sideways, and monopolizing equipment.

I had the same experience recently with a moron who was sitting sideways on the pec flye machine. He was doing a unilateral rear delt move. When he wanted to hit the opposing rear delt, he had to get up and face the opposite direction.  I don’t believe that he was even holding onto the handle. He was holding onto the “arm” of the pec fly machine.

This individual had zero deltoid development.

Thread's gone. It was started by a guy named Alexxx or something close, who was tall and Eastern Euro looking. It was a fun thread, and Jay heard about it and took it in stride, but it vanished. This was 2006-2008 or so.

Edit, Alexxx, Trainer of Champions -

.

I thought BB would remember LOL. tried looking and only saw some reference to Alexxx giving Jay advice.

Upper pecs do not come thicker than that. That’s for damn sure!

For a few days now I have been convinced that someone else is posting from your account.  Or either the psychiatrist has increased your medications.

The posts seem to be a bit more witty and closer to "normal" like we saw from you years ago before Danimal and his hands broke your mind.  Good job.  And welcome back.  (I am being serious here.  No troll.)

For training advice or gear?

He was probably peddling some gear like everyone else. I seem to remember he was busted for roids by cops and they stole some watches?

I feel that even if someone gets help to, e.g., engage their lats better it's unlikely the back is going to improve appreciably because of that. At least I've never seen anyone change with better execution. Not saying it's not worth it to at least try and everyone who is really into it will try to hone the technique over time. Some body parts are perhaps better 'felt' due to better innervation or whatever but that would also be because of genetics. And if someone has genetically good calves they never have to think about "engaging them properly," they are just there :D

I once saw a female competitor get onto the hack squat machine sideways, and she did a unilateral squat. I don’t even know how she disengaged the safety mechanism. I walked by, and  I saw her doing her reps, and I just kept on walking.

Im sure she felt that it was a new stimulus. But i would not want to be there if her knee buckled mid-rep.

Dorian actually poked fun at Glass for how he trained some guys, like Paul Dillet.

He noted that Charles, "supervising" Paul, would basically stand there and repeat, "Come on, Paul!  'Contrack!  Contrack'!" during pulldowns, paying NO attention to how Paul just pulled with his arms.

Maybe better form would have done little for Paul's back, but if you look at the "wizard's" record, who did he help that much once they turned pro?  Flex peaked in 1993.  Arguably so did Paul.  Both got bigger, but compare their looks in '93 to '99ish.  Way less detail, plus the oil in Flex.  Cormier got a lot bigger but I don't recall him doing any stand on your head sideways pulldowns in a Hammer machine.  No:  he just kept chasing progressive overload and upped the dose, like Ronnie and Dorian did.

Maybe someone might credit Glass with Gunter's jump in 2002, but that's way more a function of Gunter working with a drug guy like Chad.

There are no magic movements.  Some are a bit better than others, but realistically, a Bayesian curl won't do measurably more what a barbell curl will do.  While I like Lee Priest, I kinda hate to invoke his maxim to "just find out what works for you, eat a lot and train hard" (especially since that shaves off the bit about drugs).  That's ironic because it IS oversimplified and lazy advice.  (Train "hard"?  What does that entail?  Tom Platz "ugh, ugh, kill me!" shite?  Eat a lot?  Useless vagueisms.)  But Lee is closer to the truth than most of these YouTube twits.  A couple pair "science" with empirically proven methods aren't so bad, but to stumble off my high horse here, all else I will say is:

*Bwanks is still a royal asshole.
*Where are The Scott and Fortress?
*Eh, I'm old.  Forgot the rest ;)

I agree with your whole post pretty much.

Gunther looked amazing for a while and it for sure had little to do with training wizardry. He beat Ronnie and that's one HELL of a thing to do when Ronnie was already Mr O! But he just massively increased the drugs and GH in particular, that much is obvious. He retired soon after. Don't know if the drugs burned him out or if he was already too old to keep it up. I seem to remember him tearing his quads on the leg extension! Pretty uncommon on that movement, something that might happen to me though. In fact I did manage to cause a tear on my quad a while back, wasn't catastrophic though :D

I think Lee is pretty simple minded in some ways but he's also correct to a point, though he oversimplifies as you say. It's is all pretty simple, though I hate that common "find what works for you" refrain as that seems to imply anything can work. No, the same things work for everyone, the smaller less important details can differ between individuals, like you can substitute free squats with machine squat type movements, or you could do 10-12 reps instead of 6-8 LOL. I'm pretty sure Lee left a lot on the table as far as drugs as he seemed to be very hard headed and wouldn't do the stacks his "gurus" "prescribed." He bragged about lying to Hany about doing Hany's numerous drugs stack and only taking 2 of the drugs. The stack may or may not have been "good" but you're not optimizing anything if you think Winstrol is a substitute for GH as he said in some interview. Lee's  completely clueless re: drugs, for example he's said he didn't feel good taking testosterone as his natural testosterone was already so high. A completely retarded comment that makes zero sense and to me it should be embarrassing when a 16 year old youtube watcher knows more about your tools of the trade :D

There really are no secrets or magic prescriptions as far as lifting, drugs and diet but it seems to be very hard to do the simple things correctly, consistently. I mean it's hard for all of us, we know what we should do but we fail a lot of times :D

I think his training methods are highly overrated

Started watching his channels/methods and it was disappointing and absolutely unnecessary

you take a bodybuilder under the right drug protocol, and a basic simple training routine will do the same if not more.

everyone has been guilty of over thinking it, i did masses of AB work back in the day & i did get results but nowadays i just alternate some kind of leg raise with a basic crunch/incline sit up

"Fag business" :D

"Men shouldn't feel like fags just because they want to have nice-looking bodies... Gay people are fighting the same kind of stereotyping that bodybuilders are: People have certain misconceptions about them just as they do about us. Well, I have absolutely no hang-ups about the fag business..."

I have no problem with honing technique and having little tricks and so on, just know the limits of what it's likely to do. I have a an absolute shit ton of little tricks, special movements and improvements and anyone who loves lifting and has done it a long time likely does as well. Though some are pretty unimaginative :D

The previously mentioned Mike Van Vyck has some retarded and contradictory cues when he coaches lifters and has this insufferable disdainful air about him :D

Bob Chick used that term on here one time. And Mike O’Hearn / Billy Gunz used that term in a video one time as well. Perhaps it’s a common term at Gold’s Venice between Chick, O’Hearn, and Arnie?

He and Ropeman seemed to realize that there was no future in competing for them without having better genetics and instead went the way of personal trainer/guru.  In Ropeman's case, he became a gym owner too.

That's some insane genetics but I know what you mean, could always be better. Even if a bb is Mr O they need to branch off into gym and other business ventures, because obviously contest winnings aren't enough for anyone.
