Can protein powder be mixed in my coffee?
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:31:02 AM »

Question: Will the temperature of my coffee render my protein powder ineffective if I mix it in?

I'm using the low-carb Isopure.

Thanks for your help.

I don't believe that would be a problem.  The "denaturing" temperature is much higher than what you'd drink coffee at.

yes, you would just hate to affect the quaternary structure of your protein!

Proteins start to be denatured at about 40 degrees celcius.  Not that this is a bad thing, in the case of whey I can only assume it will take longer to absorb.  Even denatured the amino acids do not dissapear though?
It hasn't helped...

From what I understand, if one amino acid is not present in a strand of protein, the nature/intended purpouse of the protein is altered dramaticaly

Not sure whether this could be caused by temp though?

Chocolate flavored protein powder with iced coffee is quite tasty, almost mocha-ish.

You'd have to drink a helluva lot of coffee if you're mixing your protein in with it. A simple cup just wouldn't do it.

By adding protein to that amount of coffee you run the risk of caffeine overload which will actually do more harm than good - too much caffeine has the opposite effect in terms of energy kick provided to the user.

i have often made blended "coffee" shakes with cold coffee and protein powder... i think the warm version might be kinda gross... but feel free to be the guiney pig for the rest of us
