MATT HUGHES VS. BJ PENN
« on: September 25, 2006, 02:01:54 PM »
i was truely dissapointed with BJ Penn's performance. he did well the first two rounds. his stand up with Matt the first two rounds were clearly in his favor however i dont think he ever hurt Matt standing, seems like Matt just would shrug it off and smile. and then in the third round BJ just ran out of gas. he was completely dominated in the third. he looked like he didnt want to fight at all. he wasnt even availible for comments after the fight. anybody know what happened? any other info?

I really think something happened to his knee.  I haven't called over there yet cause I am giving them a day to be back.  I'll find out.  But he was killing Matt in the first rounds.  Matt couldn't do a thing to him including takig him down.  BJ connected with numeours shots and had him at the end of 2nd round.  Just 10 seconds longer and Matt was done.  I could have swore Matt tapped BJ arm near the fence at one time but Big John didn't see it.  Anyway, I to was disappointed in the 3rd.  I just can't belive he ran out of gas like that.  I do think his knee was hurt.

I was confident that BJ had him. i also thought i saw Matt tap but no one else mentioned it. i didnt see anything with his knee? although BJ'S ability to prevent Matts take down was very impressive. BJ almost didnt make it to his corner after the second round, he nearly fell. Onlyme, do you think his tendency to run out of gas is a  medical condition perhaps? ive never seen anyone lose it so quickly before, it was night and day. and Matt said " i told you so" and pointed to his corner after the ref stopped the fight like he knew BJ was going to do that.

It is widely reported that BJ had dislocated ribs.  In an interview on his website, he claims it occured when he turned the corner and escaped via the back door to take Matt's back.  Matt Hughes nutriders claim it was from a body kick Matt gave him in the second.

Bj didn't train properly plain and simple.  Instead of training like most top caliber fighters do (six days a week with one day rest)  Bj chose to train hard one day, and rest the next.   He repeated this up until the last week before his fight.  Not a good idea if you 're fighting someone like Hughes.  Bj has all the skill in the world, he just doesn't have the drive.  If he would full heartedly dedicate himself like he used to, he would be unstoppable at 155lbs-170lbs.  He had a perfect pace for the first two rounds, he had quick and snappy punches, he had wicked balance and takedown defense, and his work off the bottom was sick.  Sure, he did suffer an injury, but that didn't cost him the fight, his piss poor cardio did.  Hopefully this lights a fire under his ass and makes him take it seriously again, because I hate Matt Hughes.

I have no idea.  I will them this week and find out.  I only left a message cause I didn't want to bug them.  We are signing a lease for our new gym this week or next week and I am busy working on that.  I do knwo 100% things will turn around.  BJ is young and has allot going for him.  He defintiely needs a talking too.  But Ido promise the next fight with Hughes will end up Matt being knocked out or choked out.  I too saw the tap by Matt.  I don't think it mattered though.  There is a reason why BJ stopped in the 3rd and I will get the answer first hand.  Give me a day or so.

should have done some butterfly bench press in the gym then he would have turned matt over instead of having his arm pinned to the floor like a rape victim. BJ had the best take down defense id ever seen way bettter than chucks, stand up was good but not great, but being TKO's by a knee on the arm is just stupid.

GSP gets his shot first....does anybody have the fight linked....I'd like to see if Hughes's taps. I gotta agree with Only..10 more seconds..it just took him to long to get the arm out.

Seperated ribs makes it tough to defend the crucifix/surfboard.  See BJ's website for information on his injury.

He gassed.
matt against gsp will be interested because matt displayed some weaknesses and gsp will probably not gas.
