Yeah and what did it do to bring out any of the top tier guys? I applaud John and the IRONMAN crew for offering more money, but it's a slap in the face to them when bodybuilders piss and moan about the prize money and then fail to enter the shows.

The IRONMAN is a decent line up but this is proof that more prize money doesn't bring out any more top competitors.

Chic - Bob. You two were the loudest voices on this. There's more prize money yet no more top tier guys. Why is that?

There are lots of reasons...all of which were working on as we speak.

There is also a lot of time left for guys to throw their hat in the ring...and I'm guessing with increased prize money and 2 more qualifying spots up for grabs...you will see some more big names.

One thing I don't like is this "open timeframe" which allows the athletes to virtually give no notice to enter. I think a 8 week out commitment isn't asking too much for the guys to sign the dotted line...gives the promoter an opportunity to do his job.

some good points

you can't be expected to promote a show without knowing who is in it

the extra qualifying places will be a good incentive

The additional qualifying spots and added prize money, not to mention the best stage lighting, should bring out some top tier guys. Some of the guys who have slim to no chance of grabbing a top spot at the Arnold would be foolish not to do the IRONMAN.

This is a kick ass show and hope some more of the top guys throw their name in the mix.

I don't see why most of the top guys wouldn't take a shot in this show...If they place in the top 5 they could relax for the majority of the year and just pull in alot more guest posing/appearance money before the Olympia...Sounds like a win/win situation for the top guys....I agree with Bob on the 8 weeks notice too; that would help out greatly with promotion and ticket sales...

For the first time, the top FIVE finishers will qualify to compete in the 2007 Mr. Olympia.

the Olympia is suppose to be the best of the best.  It should be limited to the overall winners of that year's show.   once an athlete qualifies, he's less likely to do other shows that year.  so giving away five positions only cannibalize the athlete pool for other shows.

I don't think just the winner is the answer, come up with another system to make these guys compete more then once a year and requalify. I think we'd all like to see Jay and Ronnie compete more then just at the Olympia. Okay well the other pros may not for obvious reasons but the fans would.

I think a small part of the reason why when a guy qualifies for the 'O' they ONLY do the 'O' because first off...it is the MOST prestigious show and to place high there bring upon lots of new oppurtunities and opens many doors and avenues.

So they focus on being at their best THERE. Also...the competitive bar is so HIGH to compete competitivley in that show or any show let's say...the amount of 'sports pharmacological technology' thought to be NEEDED for those shows has guys ONLY gambling with their health for 'the big one'. So they feel they need to stay 'cool' for the other 7 months out of the year. Another thing...how many BIG NAMES make a decent living from this besides a Jay or Ronnie or a Dexter and can afford the $$$ needed for the food, the kits of gentrope and the astronomical amounts of 'suppliments' only to be NOT guaranteed his money back or to at least BREAK EVEN?

It has to do with risk vs reward and MONEY. Bottom line.

Darrem Charles had the right idea last year....How much money did he clear on contest winnings alone???

2006 Arnold Classic, 8th
2006 Colorado Pro Championships, 2nd
2006 New York Pro Championships, 2nd
2006 Europa Super Show, 4th
2006 Montreal Pro, 2nd
2006 Atlantic City Pro, 1st
2006 Mr. Olympia, 14th

Dude, don't even go there that's UNFAIR!

Darren Charles has the luxury of having a TOP 'supplement' company in his corner. Muscle Tech.

With the application of NitroTech, Cell Tech and Anatorp70 EVERYTHING is possible.

Throw in some PUMP tech and Hydroxycut Hardcore? Then the sky is the limit. Some guys have to pay lots of $$$ for 'pharmacological helpers'...some guys have the advantage to have Muscle Tech in their corner.

 We're comparing apples/oranges here.

Yea...your right though. Darren is the king of the little shows. Smart buisness move.

I am trying to add it up, but how much did Darrem really rake in last year on prize money alone???

Tim's really onto something here.  If the Olymypia was the top ten men in the world, it would hold a lot more prestigue than letting some poor physiques in to have 22 men onstage.

I agree. I always say Tim has great insight as well as the Great 240. I can see the TOP 2 in each show ONLY.

10-15 guys on stage ONLY could bring lots more prestige. Then again you have to look at the financial part of it. Does it make economical sense to the promoters/sponsors/'powers that be'?

how about the winners and then a point system for second through fifth place, top 3 for the year also get in.

and no automatic qualifying from one Olympia to the next.

Completly agree and I believe John Balik has suggested something along these lines. Like that of NASCAR with point totals awarded for each show and each placings for the year.

The idea is interesting and would create a stronger following.
