Head hurts when I lift
« on: January 12, 2007, 11:46:04 PM »
last week I was reping out on squats and when I got to about the 20th rep my head started hurting.  Now whenever I lift my head starts hurting to the point I have to stop my workout. I feel fine the rest of the day just when I lift this happens. I guess I need to take some time off.  Does anyone know how long something like this takes to heal.  I am guessing it is something with a blood vessel although I dont really know.

This happened to me years ago. It was because i was on a fatburner and an NO product. It was too much for me, and I must have busted a blood vessel. U might have to take a week off. If u wanna try and train through it, just make sure you're breathing right cause if u don't, that could cause the problem as well. The force of the blood is too much on the brain if you're not getting enough oxygen. And take some deep breaths after each set through your nose. Maybe like 5 or six deep breaths, don't over do it either. Watch your caffein intake as well. Hope this helps.

valsalva maneuver. It takes about 2-3 weeks for the pain to go away. You need to make sure to breathe.

i've had the same thing happened to me .. it also just comes about on squats..
funny thing is im on an n.o. product and ephidrine so i just don't take that stuff on leg day..  i  figured that i just would have to push myself through it..

question--- when would you decied that it would be time to take time off?

one time it got to the point that my hand went numb after the workout at my house,  i was doing some heavy leg presses so i omited them and currently don't have any problems.

only thing ive experienced is what i call pressure headache and thats when i would either not breath properly, holding my breath while pressing heavy weight, or if i didnt drink enough water - or both.
so that would be the first things to check imo. im sure there could be other reasons too but start there

If Herc was in  football practice (or game) and those headaches happened, I would have him see a ER doctor. Just to be cautious and on the safe side. Probably nothing to worry about at all. But if every time Herc works out, this repeats it's self, than there is a pattern here. Might want to take a week or two off and rest the body. Always pressure directed to the head area when lifting. But any serious pain, enough to make you stop the workout, should be regarded with caution. I believe Herc has a lot of experience in lifting, so these sudden headache's are surprising. Good Luck.

i had it also for like 3 workouts, it began with high rep and heavy hacksquats. but there is no way that you busted a blood vessel, otherwise you would be dead right now buddy.

I'd have that checked out.  Never know till you get an expert opinion.  Even if it's nothing, you'll be far better knowing for sure, rather than working through what might be serious.

Dude breathe out when you exert. Otherwise see a doc quick! Also why are you doing 20 reps? As a personal trainer for bodybuilders and many other populations I only advise 20 reps for my figure girls...and they lift very light...my Bodybuilders never do more than 12 reps...and they always win. PM me if you need more info...

He said he was doing squats.......you've never heard of 20 rep squats?? Most of the population need to train legs (if they seek hypertrophy)  mainly quadriceps, with higher reps because that is what they respond better to, because of the greater amounts of cross sectional area in the quadriceps.

My guess is your not eating too much, you may be low on carbs...

try having Protein and Carbs 30 mins before a workout...

You may also want to try having a during workout shake just sip a little every few mins during your work out.

bro,

I have had this happen to me three times, take three weeks off, come back...warm up (alot) , drink alot of water, do light wieghts and control your breathing...do this for like three-four weeks, then you will be back to your old animalistic lifting ways in no time. But more than likely you want to keep with the warming up , water and breathing.
