Has anyone heard of the Marcy Smith Machine/Bench Combo
« on: April 14, 2007, 11:53:28 PM »
Has anyone ever heard of the Marcy Smith Machine? Does this look like a good home gym? I am looking for a smith machine/powerack with some attachments. For the price both of these Smith Machines look good to me they weigh 400 pounds so it looks heavy duty. They both have adjustable bar catches and safety stoppers for a regular barbell.

I say the white one.  Has cable flies as well as the bar attachment for back workouts.  The black one only has the the bar and then the padded, hinged fly part.  Yeah...I have no clue what their names are.  I just know what I use. :p

Good brand, they're both good machines. Try to find a couple of stores in your area that carry an assortment of pieces including these models, and take some time to check out and compare them. Check the smoothness of the pulleys and guide mechanism for the barbell.

As far as the difference, from the pics it looks like the white one's got high pulleys that could be used for crossovers, while the black one has a center pulley for pulldowns and pushdowns. Maybe the white one also has that, can't see it. I have a feeling they're basically the same machine with different options available.

To save money, you can also check craigslist.org for something similar used at a low price, and ebay for local pickup-only used equipment in your area.

What's the difference between Linear Bearings and Linear Bushings on a Smith machine. There is another Marcy Smith Machine that looks exactly like the white one from my first post. The only difference is the White Smith machine has Linear Bearings and cost $750.00 the other Smith machine has Linear Bushings and cost $400.00. What's the difference Linear Bearings and Linear Bushings?

If you're interested in details like this, go beyond a forum:

-Call the company and discuss both the differences in options and technical aspects, as the wording & technology can vary between companies. Bushings are a type of bearing sleeve that helps ensure smooth movement; would be better to talk to them directly to get their explanation as to the difference if any in performance/smoothness and durability.

-As i said, go to stores in the area and physically compare different models & brands, in order to ascertain differences in real terms, such as pulley smoothness, finish, smith machine smoothness, etc.; use the machine for a short workout. Their terminologies are only a guide as to the technical difference, vs. real trial and error. The company's site can show where stores are, though this sometimes isn't current in which case a call can help find stores.
