I see where you're coming from. You definitely have a point here. His is a cold sort of mastery. That does have its place in the arts. But it's certainly outside the tradition as it has developed in this genre of music.
How about Stevie Ray Vaughan then? He put on some wild displays of bad-assery.
I think Stevie Ray Vaughan was influenced so much by the Albert Kings and Jimi Hendrix's that he never developed his own sound. True he's remarkable but if not for his voice could you tell who was playing? I don't think he ever really had a chance to fully grow during his drug addiction and then death coming early.
I'd throw Jeff Beck in the mix for a favorite ax man
