Swollen Stomach? Help me out with this one
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:48:58 AM »
I have been bodybuilding for about a year and a half now and made great progress. I started out at 5'10" 135 lbs. Now i am 5'10" 170 lbs. My chest, arms, delts, back and legs are growing well and in porportion, but i have recently encountered a problem with my stomach/abs. Whether i do consistent abdominal work or not, my stomach seems to be swollen all the time, not just after meals. My bodyfat is at the point where i can see my abdominals clearly when flexed and still seem them a bit when at rest, but my stomach looks distended! I'm not on any GH or gear, i have always been completely natural, so this isn't the usual GH gut you see with guys like Coleman and Silvio Samuel.

Also, I eat a healthy, bodybuilding diet 24/7 and train 3-5 days a week.

HELP ME OUT, PLEASE

do you ALWAYS wear a belt? Over time wearing a belt none stop takes teh need out for your core to stay tight and strong when lifting and instead you rely on the belt for support...don't wear it unless you have to.

ALSO when you eat a shitload that comes with lifting, it's hard not to get a little distention..especially when you've always got food in processing all the time.

i actually have never used a belt, so that's out of the question. is there anything i can modify in my diet to change this? Or possibly any training tips.  If i don't tense my abs, i can look 7 months pregnant, it's very unsightly.

Hopefully we can rule out the extreme, a very rare stomach tumor. Going to another more happy and realistic direction for the cause, any change in diet?  Some whole grain products are not suited for everyone. Soy and other types of  beans can cause (like whole grains) a blotted feeling, most of the time. Quite a few protein powders, though claimed to be of high quality, use a lower grade of soy powder as fillers. Just because it says "Super Duper Whey Protein" on the labe does not mean that it's a 100% pure Whey protein, or even 50% for that matter.  These often upset the digesting abilities. Even vitamim and other so called, high priced, BB'ing supplements are just really cheap grade that can be guilty of this stomach discomfort. Always good to read a label for extra caution, before using. Even my beloved paste, pizza and Mexian foods (my main food groups) have been found the villian for some folks. To me, it just sounds that you have a gas build up from poor diet selection. Working the abs should never cause any problem like that for most people.

Might want to try a little test and drop all extra BB'ing (even whey protein) supplements (if you use BB'ing supplements, that is) for a week or so and see if the discomfort goes away. Along with this, see if you can avoid grains/soy and other like product at this time. Go more towards meat, chicken or fish as the main core of the diet. All three are major muscle building foods anyway. If results are good by this plan, than try adding a supplement a week, along with select grain products, and watch for any negative results.

If still a problem, than food alergys could be the blame. Good luck.

you might want to try to add some stomach suck-ins (vacuums) to your routine. You basically suck your stomach in, trying to get it sucked in as much as possible. keep it sucked in for as long as possible (40-60 secs usually) repeat 2 or three times. It targets the inner wall of your abs and can get you a bit tighter. Use the twisting-ab machine aswell.

Whats your diet like?

I have a shake for breakfast with eggs usually.

2nd meal is usually chicken (never fried), or turkey on wheat bread, with more dairy products

3rd meal is a shake and a banana.

4th meal is grilled turkey or chicken breast, or some steak with baked potatoes and vegetables.

5th meal is same as 4th usually.

6th meal is a shake and cottage cheese before i go to bed.

Again, I'm 5' 10", 175lbs. I train 3-5 days a week and get in about 200 grams protein daily. I try to take in as little calories from fat as possible while still keeping the calorie count high.

A traditional macro ratio looks like this: Carbs 50% /Fats30% / Protein20%

Make sure to get enough good fats in: Olive oil, fat fish, flax seed oil, nuts, et al.

Your body needs fats.

And no, you won't get fat from eating fat. It's the amount of calories which decides that.

I guess the question would be: What's in the shake?

Of course, with any shake, the idea is to sip it slowly. Not chug-a-lug it, just dumping it into the gut, like a lot of guy's tend to do. This would be extra important if the shake was primary a hi-protein drink. Digestion starts in the mouth. Eating slowly is also another factor taken into consideration. Other than that, your diet seems pretty standard for BB'er. And as HedgeHog suggest, keep the fat in  balance with the carbs & protein. Good luck.

Side Bar: There are always exceptions to the rule. Example:One of my Samoan bro's  almost swallow, more than chew, his food. It's amazing to see him eat a burrito grande like he was swallowing a sword (in two bites), extra hot sauce and all. Than popping back a brew, to wash it all down. He can open a large family size can of tuna, mix it with pineapples, and gulp that down. A dinner hour to him would be 2 minutes. He's an easy mid 500 bencher & handles 300+ press behind the neck's. Fairly trim at 305 and 6'3 and never had any stomach or digestion problems. I played four years of college ball with him and he was a legend at the food training table, even than. He's working security up around The Hills now. Good money and other benefits to handle his food bill.

Do you have quite a small frame?  I do, and I've found the same thing.  Unfortunately, I think its just a case of your stomach growing to accommodate the increased amount of food you're eating.  Bigger guys can get away with it as they have a wider frame to fill.

Kinda like a big mans gut in a little guys body!!!

It's impossible to know without seeing you, but  I'd be willing to bet that it's a case of a tilted pelvis from tight hip flexors. It's very common in new clients who don't have a lot of workout experience since they're not usually well versed in stretching. They build legs through squats, lunges, deadlifts  and leg press' and do so incorrectly thus exacerbating tightness' and imbalances. The best thing to do is some simple psoas stretches, some hamstring and gluteal stretches. When the hips are tight and the  pelvis tilts, it promotes core weakness in the transverse abdominus as well as the erector spinae. Stretching them will elongate them thus allowing them to be built stronger for your overall stabilization and proper alignment which should solve your problem.
